Jill ABRAMSON first woman NYT editor, replacing Bill KELLER
KELLER has been one of my Coup 2000 vendettas. He gave a smug, smirking interview about how his three year old daughter saw GORE talking on t.v. and turned to say, "GORE is a bore!1 GORE is a bore!" to the amusement of KELLER and whoever. That story immediately struck me as phoney because three year olds wouldn't come up with an original insight on their own. They heard it from their clan and three year olds are the biggest sychophants in existance, striving to gain the favor of the adult love objects in their lives.

I think I have a vaguely positive impression of ABRAMSON. Info on her will be appreciated, thanks. (I'll be Googling for myself.)

Jill Abramson Replacing Bill Keller as NYT Editor

Hamilton Nolan—Whoa: at the tender age of 62, Bill Keller is "stepping down" as the editor of the New York Times. He's being replaced by managing editor Jill Abramson, who will become the first female NYT editor in history. ....

Yes, it's a historical moment for the nation's most important paper. But the most interesting question here is: why? Why is Bill Keller leaving? He had a few more years before his age would have been a factor. He could have stayed on through the 2012 elections. He aspired to that job for his entire life. And he got it. He held what is still, I think, the most influential editorial job in all of the world's media. He had the power to set the news agenda for an entire nation.

And he's quitting... to write a column? He's already done that. Furthermore, he recently jumped back into writing with a NYT Magazine column, and guess what? It sucks! I mean, we even called on his editor to fire him, from the column-writing job. We didn't imagine Keller would ever give up the most powerful editorial job in America to hold onto the fucking column gig. Bill! ....

Maybe he just wants to dedicate more time to talking about the Twitter? Or maybe there was some sort of scandal. Maybe he accidentally Tweeted a picture of his dick? These things happen. In any case—welcome, Jill Abramson! If you know more about what's going on, email me.

.... Abramson was The Times' Washington Bureau chief during the turbulent period of spring, 2003 during the run-up to the war in Iraq and the Jayson Blair scandal, which led to the resignation of Executive Editor Howell Raines and Managing Editor Gerald Boyd. Abramson was named to the news Managing Editor position (with co-Managing Editor John M.Geddes) by Raines' successor Bill Keller, who took over his current job one month prior to Abramson.

In 1995, Abramson and her Wall Street Journal colleague (and Fieldston alumna) Jane Mayer co-authored Strange Justice: The Selling of Clarence Thomas, which detailed circumstances surrounding the confirmation hearings of Justice Clarence Thomas. Maureen Dowd would later write of having bonded with Abramson during that time.<3> From 2000-01, she was a professor at Princeton University.<2> She was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2001.<4>

On February 13, 2007, Abramson testified in the perjury trial of Scooter Libby, United States v. Libby. She was called as a defense witness to undercut the credibility of Judith Miller (journalist).

Bill Keller: Editing the New York Times Was a Drag

Hamilton Nolan—In your emotional Thursday media column: Bill Keller vents, the NYT newsroom tweets, worldwide journalist peril quantified, Ed Schultz is coming back, and rumors of more Time Out troubles.

* Bill Keller is SPEAKING OUT about just how craptastic the job that he just quit was: "There's a lot of stuff they don't teach you in the mythical editors' school. They don't teach you that you're going to have to spend a lot of your life in crisis management. It's been a fair amount of that - every kind of crisis you can imagine, starting with a crisis of morale and credibility that I inherited, then going through one motherfucker of a recession." You know Bill, I always thought you were a pretty good editor. But perhaps the inherent assholeness that goes along with being an opinion writer has simply lured you back in to the writing life, where all of that inherent assholeness will no longer be disguised as mere ambition, but will be exposed for what it is. Pity.—Some asshole writer.

* In the very public Twitter outpouring of slavish celebration by NYT staffers, the award for "Funniest unintentional insult" goes to this, from John Niedermeyer: "Long ovation in the newsroom, at the announcement that @NYTimes Executive Editor @nytkeller is stepping down."
