Walkerville U.S.A

A city committee on Friday green-lighted a request to use Downtown streets for a "Walkerville" protest village starting Saturday night, setting the stage for a continuous presence by opponents of Gov. Scott Walker's budget who will spend their nights camped in up to 30 tents along the roads. County supervisor Annalise Eicher, said "It's a great opportunity for the city of Madison to help with the idea of open government," noting that Capitol access has been drastically restricted since the mass protests in February and March … sleeping tents be broken down and removed from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Friday and from 4:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday. The earlier time on Saturday is to clear the way for farmer's market vendors. First-aid, food and information tents will be allowed to stay up during daylight hours … The proposed camp area is North Carroll Street from State Street to West Washington Avenue, and West Mifflin Street from State Street to Wisconsin Avenue … organizers opted to go through the permit process, rather than simply stage a protest, so they could work with the city and not have a negative impact on businesses. :fistbump: :headbang: :yourock:

..............Organizers have another hurdle to clear: a special event campground permit. County health services supervisor Beth Cleary said the Madison-Dane County Health Department, which issues the permits, will inspect the site Saturday night before the group's 7 p.m. kickoff rally and likely grant the permit, which costs $378, if the site meets agreed upon standards for drinking water, toilets and garbage collection.

Organizer David Boetcher said We Are Wisconsin — an alliance of community groups, labor unions and others — did not believe it would have been granted a permit to be located on the Capitol grounds.

2. This is an awesome quote...
"organizers opted to go through the permit process, rather than simply stage a protest, so they could work with the city and not have a negative impact on businesses."

Very cool way to go about things. This also proves they're not anti-business and willing to try to work together.

4. Yes, I noted that also. They will keep the Repugs at bay
somewhat with this policy. But repugs think Madison in general is a blue lagoon so they will whine about anything and everything. Walker and his goons have keep the Capitol-the peoples house essentially locked down so the organizers had to move outside. Thank the godessess for summer weather.

11. How so?
How will these keep the Repugs at bay?

I guess I am missing the point of this camp out.

13. I was thinking that since they got the permits etc., hopefully the
repugs would be less inclined to make trouble for them. But that is perhaps wishful thinking on my part.

15. Support our WI activists
Walkerville is a tent city that was set up last night in Madison. Tents have been pitched on the block surrounding the Capitol. It is an amazing sight to see. I was there last night and the protesters are teachers, union workers etc. It is peaceful and effective. If you would like to support our protesters, you can order them a pizza from Ian's pizza, who has agreed to deliver to the information station of the protest. I will post a link to their phone number below. Please spread the word and let's support our activists in Madison, WI.

Order them pizza:
