BUDAPEST, June 3 (Xinhua) -- The Hungarian government has accepted the request of the government of the United States to assume the protection of American diplomatic and consular interests in Libya, the Hungarian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

Hungary has already been representing Canada, Greece, Croatia and Italy in Tripoli. The Hungarian Embassy also represents the European Union in Libya.

In this way, Hungary takes its share in contributing to the efforts of its allies and partners in encouraging the extraordinary changes unfolding in North Africa and the Middle East, the statement said.
