Congressman Weiner was stalked and set up by a Christian Infowar Militia cell based largely in Oklahoma City.

This is what a clumsy infowar cell looks like after Anonymiss finishes up crawling all over them. This is a redacted version – there is some stuff that was found that they don’t want to show just yet, but this group already knows someone is on to them and they’re starting to lock up or delete their accounts.



There is a spreadsheet with all of the tweets from these nine accounts going back into April and it’s in chronological order. The tweet number refers to the item IDs in the PDF files that were made of the tweet streams – lock up? Delete? Matters not, they’re already caught. Several people have those PDFs, I put them in my Scribd for safe keeping, and I see my account has had almost 800 reads in the last 24 hours.

@patriotusa76 and @goatsred were in the middle of it, but it looks like this whole group was involved in making it happen.

I haven't the first clue about Twitter. I have a basic cell phone that allows me to call and text, but there's no internet functionality. And that's fine with me.

All Twitter messages -- or tweets -- are public, except for those that are sent as private message to one particular individual (much like private messages here at DU.) When you "follow" somebody on Twitter, you get all their tweets sent to you automatically, but you don't need to follow people, or even have your own Twitter account, to be able to see their posts.

There is a 140 character limit per Tweet (though there are now ways of extending that), which helps to keep things short and simple.

Twitter users have also come up with informal systems for improving the way information gets around -- most notably what is called "hashtags." This means that people who are communicating on a certain subject will put a word (or two words run together) with a "#" symbol in their post. Then anybody who searches twitter on that combination will see all the recent tweets using that tag.

As far as nailing these guys -- because Twitter is public, their hate speech is right there out in the open. But somebody has to be paying attention and noticing that certain people are specializing in it and that groups of them are all following one another and tweeting back and forth.

Finding out people's real identities is harder -- just as it would be here on DU -- but if you're determined, it's often possible.

It isn't entirely clear to me, but it looks like somebody was already aware of this particular group before their Rep. Weiner prank and was able to identify them very quickly as a result.

And that's really all you need to know about Twitter -- at least as far as being able to follow the discussion. Actually using it takes a bit more expertise, but not much more.
