do the democrats lack the cynicism needed in politics? |

As much as I revile the republicans, they have an effective kind of cynicism. 45 years ago, the party knew that they didn't have enough of a base to compete with the democrats. So they tried to dismantle the democratic coalition that had been in place since FDR and try to turn them against each other. What they are doing right now is also cynical yet effective in the sense that they are trying to hurt the economy even more so they can blame Obama for it because they know the voting habits of people. I even think McCain picked Palin to guarantee a loss so that Obama would be elected and that they would lose as many seats as they did in 2010.

If they don't have the facts on their side, they make shit up and repeat it until 50+1% of voters who show up on election day buy into it.

2. Republicans are not cynical. They are fervently hypocritical. |
|
That's completely different.

that seems like a trait that many democrats both elected officials and regular people seem to lack. "They pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. *That's* the *Chicago* way!" When you are dealing with psychopaths, that is that in the mentality you have to have.
