9. It's starting to look like a riddle with no answer |
|
Cain will drop as people figure out who he is. That leaves only Romney and Pawlenty near the top -- with the possibility of Huntsman gaining traction if he gets more name recognition.
But Romney is already inspiring an anyone-but-Romney movement over on the Tea Party fringe. Pawlenty has all the charisma of a moldy dishrag. Huntsman doesn't seem to have his heart in it. And there doesn't seem to be any white knight waiting in the wings to run as a dark horse.
That leaves only two paths I can see. One is that the GOP goes with one of the crazies in a full-on suicide pact. The other is that Rove and the money guys go all out for one of the plausibles (most likely Pawlenty) and manage to buy enough convention delegates to put them over.
But there are further implications to both these scenarios. If the crazies prevail, even if their candidate goes down in flames, they're likely to get a permanent lock on the GOP -- just as Movement Conservatism did after Goldwater's massive defeat in 1964. And if the crazies lose, it's likely to split the party, either by way of an immediate Palin third party candidacy or in the long run.
I wish I could say I was happy about either of these prospects, but I'm not. This country needs a functioning two-party system, and if the GOP craters, what arises in the ashes is likely to be fascist or worse.
