http://www.politicususa.com/en/gop-viagra-planned-parenthoodThe recent passage of H.R. 3 in the Republican controlled House of Representatives sent a strong message to women that the conservative Christian-inspired legislation is serious about eliminating access to abortion services provided by Planned Parenthood. The legislation also eliminates the health insurance deduction on Schedule A of a 1040 Personal Income Tax return if a health policy includes abortion coverage regardless if the health plan is paid for with personal funds or a company health plan. Some Republicans have stated that eliminating Planned Parenthood is meant to eliminate birth control for women altogether so they will be little more than birthing machines.
Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) gave a recorded video address at a conservative Christian political convention, The Awakening, where she said that Washington elites have “declared war on marriage, on families, on fertility, and on faith,” and regardless the veracity of her statement, the war on fertility is being quietly used as motivation by the Religious Right to defund Planned Parenthood. In Texas, a state lawmaker, Rep. Wayne Christian told a reporter who asked if the push to defund Planned Parenthood was really a war on contraception. Christian responded that, “Well, of course, it’s a war on birth control and abortions and everything. That’s what family planning is supposed to be about.”
There is a inequality in the Republican’s attacks on women, and their ability to acquire contraception is the next logical step in defining a woman’s role as “hyper-fertile wives and mothers in obedient service to God” and it is unfair and unethical. If H.R. 3 becomes law, women will lose their income tax deduction for carrying a policy that includes abortion coverage, and it will eventually include contraceptives, but men can deduct erectile dysfunction pills and all manner of “male enhancement” devices so they can impregnate women with greater ease.
The idea that women are fertile wives is derived from the bible (Genesis 1:28) and expounded upon by a Catholic screed based on a 1995 letter from Pope John Paul II to women at the United Nations’ Fourth Conference on Women in Beijing, China. The Pope’s letter proffered the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary and her life’s purpose as an expression of love and he stated, “Mothers conceive new life, the fruit of the womb, as a result of being fertile and receptive to the love of a husband and to God’s love, both of which are potentially life-giving.” If that sentiment is the motivation for the elimination of Planned Parenthood, then eliminating abortion services is not the real goal of conservative Christians because Planned Parenthood cannot use federal money to pay for abortions and the great majority of their services are for reproductive health including safe, low-cost and effective contraceptives.
