U.N. study: $40 billion annual investment needed for global carbon reduction

By Agence France-Presse

NAIROBI (AFP) – Investing $40 billion annually in the forest sector is needed for the world to transition into a low carbon, resource-efficient green economy, according to a UN report released here Sunday.

The additional investment "could halve deforestation rates by 2030, increase rates of tree planting by around 140 per cent by 2050," said the report published by the Nairobi-based United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

"Carefully planned investments would also contribute to increased employment from 25 million today to 30 million by 2050," it also added.

The cost of ensuring a green transition would equal $40 billion a year or around 0.034 per cent of global GDP, the report said.

2. U.S. Lawmakers Disengaged From Climate, UN’s Figueres Says
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-06-01/u-s-lawmakers-disengaged-from-climate-un-s-figueres-says-1-.html

U.S. legislators have disengaged from the fight against global warming, even as the administration of Barack Obama remains committed to its emissions-reduction target, according to the United Nations climate chief.

“It’s very evident that the legislative body in the U.S. has disengaged,” Christiana Figueres, executive secretary for the UN Convention on Climate Change, told a news conference at the Carbon Expo in Barcelona. “The administration continues to stand by their 17 percent target.”

The so-called Green Climate Fund being created by UN envoys to help developing nations cope with climate change should be operating by 2020 “at the latest,” Figueres said. “Hopefully before that.”

It may take years to put together the structure of the fund and find the capital amounting to $100 billion a year, she said.
