Barack Obama's private golf club
Barack Obama's private golf club
By GLENN THRUSH | 6/6/11 4:33 AM EDT

House Speaker John Boehner has broken into one of the most exclusive groups in Washington — the small circle of old friends and administration officials President Barack Obama has invited for a round of golf.

Boehner, who sports a fairway tan and an 8 handicap, will tee off with Obama June 18 — marking one of the only times the leader of the free world will have played with a Republican or a fellow elected official and the first time he will have played with a sitting member of Congress.

More gregarious politicians, such as Boehner and former President Bill Clinton, view the game as the convivial marriage of sports, politics and schmooze. Lyndon Johnson, a lousy golfer but a first-class legislator, secured Senate votes for the historic 1964 Civil Rights Act while on the links.

But Obama is more hermetic about a sport that has supplanted basketball as his weekend passion — and he’s been loath, until now, to mix business with pleasure.

Oh...that's a fairway tan that Boehner has...go figure! Golf must be a lot more fun than it looks. I can't imagine spending 5 hours chasing a little ball around.

2. i'm sure the GOP will cooperate after 18 holes
:sarcasm:

more likely, Boehner will get drunk, let the facade slip, and accidentally do something responsible.

3. With a chronically painful back?
How can he play golf? The Boner quit the Navy after a few weeks of boot camp because of a bad back. From what I remember of Navy boot camp, it would take a lot of convincing to get out for a "sore back."

I don't play golf, but it seems there is a lot of back twisting going on. The Boner wouldn't have wussed out of the Navy on a lie would he?

5. It looks bad for Obama to be playing golf with Boehner right now in this atmosphere.

11. No.
If he, for example, ordered an end to federal marijuana dispensary raids, that would not "look bad" to me. It would look very good. So would proposing cuts to the subsidies of the 10 top corporate donors, saying that such a move was necessary to show the American people that congress is serious about reducing the deficit in a fair way. But playing golf with Boehner, who is trying to take health care away from seniors to give $$$ to millionaires, that does "look bad."

Take the baseless personal attacks somewhere else. A lot of people think Obama is not enough of a leader.

9. You know what? Fuck golf. Seriously, it seems to me like its the exclusive domain of the bourgoise.

I saw Rushbo on the Golf chanel smoking a cigar the other day and chatting with the hosts. That tells me about all I need to know about Golf.

My dad used to play, but he got out of it because it took so much money in dues, fees, tipping people, etc. Its not like one can call up their buddies play a round of golf in their own backyard.

As far as sports go, soccer, basketball, baseball. In that order.

15. Doesn't seem like you know much about golf
every class of people play the game. Plumbers, factory workers, social workers etc etc. Pay for your round and walk the course. Some of the most relaxing and enjoyable times I've had have been during round of golf. Exercise, an afternoon or morning spent with friends having a good time. Bourgoise?

He needs to be humbled. I'll bet Boner cheats, too.

I just looked him up on the CDGA website and he is not listed as having a handicap.
