E-mail headers, for example, are really easy to fake. I could put an E-mail out there claiming to be coming from a Republican Congressman's press office, send it through an open spammer proxy, and I'd bet that most of the media wouldn't check to see what was going on.

Not saying that's what happened, but this whole thing is getting fishier by the minute.
