And to think I actually told someone yesterday that he was being set up and framed. I'm an old fart... you'd think I'd know better.

Stupid. That's my problem with it. Same w/ all these politicians, and those are just the one's who get caught. You know they are all up to something that could bring their careers down. Why are they so self-destructive? Personally, I think it would be kind of funny if it wasn't such a serious blow to his career. But why risk everything just to get your jollies?

It's like their egos are so inflated that they just don't think that anybody or anything can take them down - that goes for Republicans and Democrats alike. Still, I live in NYC and I would still probably vote for him even though I'd like to kick him in the ass.

I was sexted (word?) by a 40-something and married Fortune 500 "C Level" executive, I wasn't terribly impressed by that - being both attached and it having been sent to my office phone. God only knows what the fuck she was thinking. And even within the company I work for there have been two embarrassing episodes where one woman was found to have an extremely explicit myspace page detailing her "cougar lifestyle" and a profile picture which was her, sitting in her car wearing only a yellow bra. And another fiasco had a couple who had an online photo album that could be found by goggling their names which I am told was very explicit.

Years later we (and she) still get crap about the myspace page which was circulated industry wide. I'm told her facebook page isn't much better.

139. His first comments were not really denials. In fact, people noted
that on DU. And his accusation that someone hacked his account is probably true. I would not be surprised if that has been affirmed.

When I really think about it, I misunderstood Weiner's statement that his account had been hacked. I thought he meant that someone had sent something in his name that he had not sent. Now that I think about it, he meant he sent a private message and someone intercepted it. Both acts would probably constitute hacking.

I wonder when our Congress members will finally realize that they have no privacy on the internet or in their personal phone conversations.

We have been warned that the government is interpreting the Patriot Act in ways that would surprise us. I question whether they are hacking all of our communications. They would be pretty bored with mine. No nude or even suggestive pictures of any sort.

But how do people's phone conversations, personal Twitter posts and other personal data entrusted to electronic media become so public so quickly? Isn't it illegal to snoop like that if you are a private person? And shouldn't Congress make it illegal for the government to snoop like that without probable cause to suspect criminal activity?

152. I agree, the government shouldn't be allowed to snoop like that.
But I haven't heard that the government was snooping -- I thought it was those Breitbart people. And they didn't have to work too hard at it, because Weiner was blasting his tweets to the world. As I understand it, he meant to send a private message but made a mistake and sent it to everyone on this list. And that list included some creeps.

153. I was wrong. My husband advised me about what really happened.
Here is the story.

Rep. Anthony Weiner showed an understanding of the new age of privacy during a press conference on Weinergate this afternoon. Weiner subjected himself to a half-hour whacking by journalists, during which he admitted to lying about his Twitter account being hacked, saying that he did send a photo of his little member of Congress to a Seattle college student “as a joke.” He had intended to send it privately as a direct message, but messed up. On Twitter, this is called a “#DM Fail.” It happens fairly often — it’s the equivalent of the inadvertent “Reply All” of email — and is a good reason NOT to use Twitter as a forum for sending racy photos of yourself.

Another DUer said he must've accidentally send the PM in a way that does a sort of Tweet-blast, like an e-mail blast. If that's the case, he did this 6-10 times? That's the amount of pics Breitbart says he's got.

I dunno. Sounds fishy.

211. I've been informed by a hater on HuffPost that the tweet had been intercepted
and so have the others Breitbart has in his possession.

How in the HELL do you intercept tweets?? Unless, of course, you're lying in wait in the "bushes" watching Rep. Weiner closely.

Be that as it may, this whole affair reeks...and I'm not talking about Rep. Weiner's flirting, either. I'm talking about how this scumbag Breitbart, who has never apologized for what he's done to Shirly Sherrod, got her to resign, but who now DEMANDED an apology from Rep. Weiner, got his slimy fingers on those photographs that were NOT meant for him.

Tbat's what I'd like to know.

Also, I hope Rep. Weiner does NOT resign. That would give Breitbart TWO victories against TWO Progressives, and he'll be a huge star on Fux News Channel.

197. WAY beyond the subtle act of flirting....
Edited on Tue Jun-07-11 09:01 AM by roxiejules

Flirting is a playful, romantic or sexual overture by one person to another subtly indicating an interest in a deeper relationship with the other person. Flirting usually involves speaking and behaving in a way that suggests a mildly greater intimacy than the actual relationship between the parties would justify, though within the rules of social etiquette, which generally disapproves of a direct expression of sexual interest.

199. Plus encourage others to lie...
Rep. Anthony Weiner encouraged a porn star to lie about their on-line relationship and offered her the help of his public relations team, according to a report on Tuesday.

Weiner sent emails to former X-rated performer Ginger Lee – to whom he’d previously acknowledged sending innocuous messages via Twitter – coaching her to deny that they had been communicating, reported TMZ, which obtained the messages and says the two had exchanged “scores of sexual emails over a long period of time.”

The American prudery I mentioned wasn't invented when he took office. It's the political climate he rose to power in, and he cannot claim not to have participated in his own neutering.

He should have known better. But it isn't the end of the world.

I'm amazed at those on this thread who are piling on Weiner, when the difference between him and Craig, Vitter et. al. is that Weiner doesn't go around banging on his bible and bleating about "family values" while promoting legislation that deprives people of their rights. It's the HYPROCRISY, stupid! I don't know how many times that needs to be said.

As to the lying about a personal, albeit stupid, action, I would urge those that take issue with this to get back to me when they've stopped twisting themselves into pretzels trying to justify the serial lying of those in the higher echelons of our government about things that really affect our lives.

Oh, and you're correct. Breitbart is a malevolent little troll. :puke:

194. I disagree, for this reason
Yeah, he lied about this. He made a really stupid mistake. Very stupid.

But there isn't another democrat in congress who fights harder. Who will stand up and yell 'Deal with it!' to the Republipigs like he will. His political career has a good track record.

So, yes, he made a terrible mistake. But, he's come clean, and it is quite obvious to anyone who watched it that he really hates what he did, and is sorry. So, as a forgiving person, I am willing to allow for his mistake.

In the larger scope of things, in a country where politicians are bought by corporations, who lie about being for the people when they're really voting for their donors, all while espousing 'family values' and Christian values while clinging to ideologies and beliefs that go completely against Christian values (Ayn Rand), I'd say that a small sex scandal shouldn't even be newsworthy.

I'd vote for him, based off his record for actually fighting for his constituents. Wish I lived in his district.

another hard-core Progressive. That would make him a hero in Rightwing World, and being a huge hero will net him millions, contracts, and a bigger platform to spew his bile into the world.

Is that what we want?

Progressives and Democrats should STOP demanding Rep. Weiner resign. We need to stop pretending our pols are "better'n them!". They're not. They're pols. Let's stop playing defense and go on the offense.

Why should we be helping this bottom-feeder, Breitbart, gain notoriety in Rightwing World? Why should we open the door to another Glen Beck? Is that what we want? If not, then we should stand behind Rep. Weiner and tell all those other fuckers to fuck off, just like ALL the Republicans stand by Paul "KillMedicare" Ryan and tell us all to fuck off, too.

Were Ryan a Democrat, I doubt he'd get the support he's getting from his fellow Republicans as we speak. And that, in and of itself, is a sad state of affairs for our party and our causes.

It's about the fact that a lot of people so vehemently defended Weiner. Even to the point of being NASTY to people who doubted him.

I was one of those doubters, and I was probably vilified by the more rabid believers. I wouldn't know, really...I gave my opinions and then just didn't go back, preferring not to deal with any of the shit that I was sure might be thrown at me for not going along with the crowd.

Anyway, I don't know about anyone else, but in my world, if I defend you, you had damned well better be telling the truth.

It's not about the sex. It's about trusting and having one's trust dragged through the dirt.

politicians lying about sex, I have, since Clinton, come to the conclusion that men lie about sex that is embarrassing to them. Why they do these stupid things in the first place is a mystery to me. But there is such a long list of men who did something stupid of a sexual nature and then lied about it that I can't be too harsh when yet another one is caught.

I have to add that it is not as if Weiner actually had extramarital sex. The picture that Jon Stewart showed was almost more a joke than anything else.

106. Family Values...
I don't really get the distinction. I mean, is it okay, because he didn't say he believes in family values? I'm sure his wife thought he did, even if he didn't say it. I think the people who voted for him, also believed it to a degree...even if he never voiced it.

I'm not sure he should resign. I think this will fade away as long as this is the worst that happens. But, some other DUers have made a good point. If he is weakened because of what's floating beneath the surface waiting to pop up, I think he should step down, before it does.

The mainstream media (MSNBC) Lawrence O'Donnell show is now floating that he was a talker (sure), but not much of a doer. But, because he was very vocal and basically good in front of a camera, other democrats in office were willing to let him share in the credit. If that's the case, I doubt he'll get much support, behind the scenes. They made a good point. Barney Frank has been in some interesting binds. But, he's vocal AND a really hard worker behind the scenes. They implied, Anthony was just vocal...and not much of a worker.

70. I'm still on board with Weiner's politics.
And just sent the DCCC some money from a Weiner e-mail request to me, to boot.

Let the punishment fit the crime. Not tweeting or video games for Anthony, until he crushes this repug assault on Medicare, and forces Clarence Thomas to recuse himself.

Outside of that, it's up to his wife to decide if she wants to knee him in the yarbles for this.

To satisfy the people who feel so betrayed and upset by Weiner lying, we can punish Weiner like we punish the syphilitic serial-liar Breitbart. We'll make Weiner spend hours of time in front of mass media sources, promoting the Democrats' political agenda.

This was all just a plain, outright stupid thing.

Edited on Mon Jun-06-11 09:54 PM by MzShellG
Are you a Bill Clinton supporter? Clinton, who gave the repukes so much legal leverage by lying "under oath" that they impeached him? And by the way....was our PRESIDENT! Is there a double standard or what? Weiner stood with the dems so I'm standing with him. He and his wife can figure out the 'inappropriate communications' between themselves. I refuse to get caught up this media hoopla.

If we demand the head of every politician that lied about something, I don't think we'd have any left. I'm much less concerned with one that lies about the details of their private life that isn't actually anyone's business than one that lies about policy.

that every time he stands before the public and makes one of his brilliant statements, people like Breitbart will allude to these stupid mistakes. That will make Weiner a less effective spokesman.

Someone suggested that he make public service announcement videos warning people to think carefully about what they do and say on the internet. I think that is a good idea. That would help him earn back a little good karma.

136. For some reason I'm so f'in sick of these perverts who can't
keep their dicks in their pants (Dems & Repugs). And how friggin' STUPID??????????????? And then he lied to everybody. I'm sorry that I disagree w/you but I called his voice mails earlier and sent an email telling him I think he should resign. People won't forget this and IMHO, it's bad for the Democrats. Once again, I don't know why his behavior has outraged me so much but it has. My sis and I are both political junkies and consider ourselves liberals. But this is disgusting to the both of us. I feel the same way about Edwards. When he was first running in '08, he was who I supported. I sent a little money to his campaign. I WANT MY MONEY BACK! And of course, the pathetic behavior of the Repugs (like Ensign, Newt, and too many others to even mention) makes me even sicker because they do things like live in "Christian" houses in D.C. I've posted so many times tonight on this Weiner issue. WHAT IN THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THESE MEN????????????????????

Hire a damn good pit-bull of a divorce attorney. The guy was fishing to cheat within just months of being newly-wed to a quite lovely woman. He's a predator and clearly not marriage material.

I've seen nothing but mostly outrage on this site tonight.........over something that is no one's business but his.
Five US soldiers died in Iraq today..........any outrage over that? didn't think so
I didn't see the dems so upset when they voted for the lies that started wars that are still killing our men and
women and has killed untold thousands of Iraqi citizens. I don't see the dems trying to do anything about bringing
to justice all the people who told all those lies to start wars.
This insane outrage over a photo is way beyond out of place.
Six people were shot to death in Arizona this past Friday. Didn't see any outrage over that either.
Guess they aren't important if they aren't "important."

The same mental midget mentality tried that with Bill Clinton. Nay, had Bright Fart technology existed in the 1940's, we would have seen a sepia photo of tossed down crutches along side a naked rub down towel with Roosevelt initials on it, accompanied by rumors of Eleanor's girlfriends.

in principle. I just have to interject though, in Polanski's case, the girl was 13. And yes, I agree with his fugitive status in California.

227. And if he was a Republican would you also? I doubt it.
I get so frustrated at the double standards. I expect it from Republicans, not from Liberals.

234. Here's my serious suggestion
Anthony Weiner should go on Howard Stern's show, do some funny stuff that Howard can think up, be forthright about things, disclose other things which Howard can easily deflect with some sophomore-level humor and now it's all out in the open. Can't be held to extortion by Breitbart or anyone else. And, Howard can make him look like a cute teddy bear at the end, and a stud too.

236. I'm more disappointed in Pelosi
for calling for an investigation. You know, in light of the fact that "impeachment is off the table" and we had to "look forward" in regard to Bush malfeasance. This is a pure bullshit nation and it's up around our knees.

He may have done something stupid, but he knows the proper way to speak to Republicans (i.e. uncompromisingly). And we so need people like that. I'm certainly sorry the vessel has a wee flaw, but my thought is that it still holds water.

257. I do too..
What happened is between him, his wife and of course the women who received the pictures. The only time I'd think differently is if the politician who was running, ran on "family values", preached about the "sanctity of marriage" and was opposed to same sex marriage. I'd also have a very different view if the photo's were sent to young women who were underage.

I find the whole story nauseating and hope that the press will move on and cover things that will impact the lives of the American people. I've had the same reaction to republicans who were caught up in affairs and such if they didn't pretend to be "holier than thou." I still think Weiner is good at his job and I'm glad he didn't step down. This is just a sideshow and quite frankly a waste of time. He's not the first politician and he won't be the last who gets caught doing something foolish. He's a flawed human being as are we all.

262. If the sexter had been a rethug these boards would have self-imploded
from all the calls for him/her to resign. Since it's Weiner "hey, it's no big deal!". He should have resigned yesterday. And he shouldnt have been a bald faced liar from day one.

263. My stance has remained the same regarding cheating politicians,
whether they're republican or Democrat. The only issue I have, as I've stated in my post is if, the politician was running around preaching about family values, opposed to same sex marriage and behaving as though, he is holier than thou. I like Wiener as a Congressman and I hope that other New Yorkers feel the same.

As a layperson in web-tec terms, here's a modest suggestion: Split screen, once you're in the discussion. Left side is the post folders (Maybe a third of the screen). Right side is the posts, both comments and rebuttals. You'd combine the best representations of your Democratic postings with the best of Buzzflash's. (They always fail by letting verbose people put columns of text in, late in the game.) It would be easier to follow DU's discussions this way. Screw the fame, of being on top of the General Discussion forum, with flames coming off the icon.

Last suggestion is: add a 'bottom' beside the 'top', on the 'reply edit top' line. And put a (an) one-line space between bracketed discussions that move inward to the right. A professor that I had at U. Cal. S. C. told me to read and write so that the last para re-iterates the first, the second last re-iterates the second first, and inward & onward. Spacing will allow people to ignore bracketed discussions that hold no interest for them.

'Onward or inward' is the same as 'upward and outward'. Yin yang type of thing. This may confuse the zwinky DU ad-bot, but such is life.
