The BIG differences between Canadians and Americans |
|
#1 We don't give a shit about sexual scandals, unless some law has been broken. We just don't care. Harper could be caught in a five-way with Breitbart, Kissinger and the Koch brothers. We wouldn't care. Our press doesn't cover it because they KNOW we don't care.
#2 We don't do revenge killings. Or even approve of revenge killings without even the chance of a fair, impartial trial (remember those? Americans practically wrote the book. Nuremberg, hello?)
#3 We don't give a hoot about a political candidate's religion. It's considered bad taste to mention a candidate's PERSONAL, SPIRITUAL views. And any spiritual leader who opines about our politics is swiftly given the public boot.
#4 Guns DO NOT guarantee one freedom from violence. So we limit guns and ESPECIALLY handguns, which are DESIGNED to kill people fast and with a minimum of wait time.
#5 We DON'T worship our military as if our whole existence depended on them. The western world has NOT, I repeat NOT, been threatened with existential destruction since WWII. Viet Nam, Grenada, Beirut, Libya, Iraq and Afghanistan never had a chance to end life as we know it. Yes, I know, we're in Afghanistan, too. I just don't attribute my freedom to any soldier there "fighting for my way of life"
Just to let you know.

5. I live in Canada although my family is in the US and I have found that Canadians are |
|
live and let live kind of people.
They also don't care what religion their neighbours practice, where they come from, what they're sexual preference is or what the colour of their skin is. They just don't care and I think it's a matter of minding their own business and accepting people for what and who they are, where they come from, their culture.
Republicans hate half of the country and they make no apologies for it. They hate Obama because of his skin colour but mostly because they are assholes.
I don't think the US needs any more bigotted and racist leadership. If they don't represent ALL of the people they should represent NONE.

I've been looking for a position in Canada for a few years -- they're hard to find.
Oh, and there's this: "All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority."

Now, get busy and pass some giant tax breaks for the wealthy and cut social services to the bone! Then you can be like so many of us. Gullible, fearful, self-loathing and dumber than a box of rocks because we have almost no real news media left.
Geez, you guys. And don't even get me started on that metric system thing.

123. Corporate people are different than ordinary people. Was the Corp |
|
here in the US?
I have been to Canada and have Canadian friends and have never heard the kind of jingoism we hear here regarding the military, the superiority of this country etc. etc. Granted most of it comes from the hypocrites on the right, but when you travel around the world you realize how extreme that kind of nationalism is here. The reason imo, is we are an Empire, invading and pillaging other nations and to keep support for that going, they need to keep rousing people up with 'patriotism, freedoms, liberty, the flag, the troops' etc. It's absolutely ridiculous and it does NOT exist anywhere I have ever been to the extent it does here. People ask me all the time about it. No other country worships its military, well pretends to, we don't really care about them, the way we do.

As for other countries, including Canada, and "not having heard the kind of jingoism we hear here regarding the military, the superiority of this country, etc."
No, of course you haven't...Along with the rest of us, you've heard THEIR kind of jingoism, manifested most recently by the OP.
Like most here, I hate the silly "USA! USA"! nonsense, but, as you say, "most of it comes from the hypocrites on the right" and not only do I find most non-Americans NOT
making that distinction, but I find they have a "superior" attitude all their own which, as others here have noted, they like to "share" with us
at every opportunity.
I won't deny or turn a blind eye to THEIR foibles just because we have our own.

24. Re# 1 I don't believe the vast majority of U.S. citizens care either but our |
|
corporate media doesn't reflect the peoples' needs so much as that of the corporations' needs.
Our corporate media is more inclined to program, influence or brain wash us rather than reflect or enlighten our wants and needs.
Our corporations; need a weak government beholden to them in order to allow corporate domination over the people, that's why anything of salacious material particularly if said politician is of the liberal/progressive bent is covered as if it were the royal wedding.
However moral, ethical and corrupt transgressions ie: (SC Justice Thomas' conflict of interest) by conservative members of government which actually threaten the Prime Directive of corporate supremacy over a weak "We the Peoples'" government are almost always ignored.
As for your #s 3 & 5 much of that is promoted by our corporate media for the same reason, the means being dividing and conquering the people by social and financial mores to prevent their unification; which could create the prospect of a strong government; believing in a public good and thus posing a threat to corporate supremacist desires to privatize everything under the sun.
The Republicans and their corporate media propaganda machine are quick to promote religion as a counter to enlightened government policies helping "the least of these" again because they prefer a nation where the people are disconnected from their government, so that government can more easily be demonized and because religion itself can be used as a divider of the people given enough propaganda.
Our military does serve corporate interests more often than actual national security threats and the corporate media places them on a pedestal to prevent the American People from realizing the overwhelming % of the budget spent on defense and by inference to eliminate the mindset of discretionary in regards to defense spending, again this works as a counter to strong social, structural, and environmental programs being enacted.
Thanks for the thread, Canuckistan.

Both countries have people who love to puff their chests out, and proclaim how much superior their country is to the other.
Americans often get accused of being arrogant, which is often a totally valid point. But Canadians often strike me as just as arrogant. You post is a perfect example.

I don't know anything about the culture, but sadly down here we have sort of a throwaway society, once someone becomes unpopular, commits a crime, does something humiliating or makes a mistake we are content to pretty much get rid of them forever from the public sphere. It sucks. We really don't value human life much IMO.

People are worried about us, WE are worried about us. My friends in Europe ask me all the time 'what's with America these days'. People watching our decline from outside our bubble are shocked at what we are doing and what is happening to this country.
So if there are still parts of Canada where you don't hear that, they are less worried than eg, Germany or Ireland, France etc.

it's not some sort of feeling of superiority. Most of us grew up looking up to the US. Over the years we have seen how far it has fallen. My parents' generation, who grew up during the Vietnam war are not so surprised, but those of us who grew up during Clinton are pretty darn shocked at how far the US has fallen and feel like sometimes we have to pierce the bubble Americans are in to try to get through to them. Everyone I know that has gone to the states, or has had a US friend visit can't WAIT to talk to them about politics and the state of the US because we (as well as the rest of the world) are totally freaked out at what is happening with your country. And we are totally puzzled at why it seems no one in the US seems to care as much as the rest of us.

Are you actually attributing all this criticism
from other countries to the notion that they are "worried" about us?
The concern is duly noted, as they say
but you'll have to forgive a good number here
who wouldn't find that assumption all that credible.:eyes:
Surely some are well-intentioned, but I'd bet
on a larger sector waiting with
baited breath and a big dose
of schadenfreude
We are, in any case, the only ones
who can change things here.

But I've been a member of DU since 2002. I LOVE American politics. It's theater, a microcosm of human extreme behaviour and just plain instructive of where the world is going.
I check out DU daily. I can't help but be involved in the issues and the opinions. Hell, I was even approached by a Congressional candidate and a New York Times reporter for my involvement. It's my obsession and my habit.
But maybe I should be more objective and not get pissed off about our differences. One thing's for sure. I'll be around for a while. Because I can't quit.

55. I did tell. I think you're OP is appallingly rude |
|
I think that you Canadians have voted in a right wing government and you're moving increasingly in that direction. I know Canadian forces go fight wherever Americans go. and that's either because they're being bullied by the American gov't or because they agree with these horrible wars. Either way, it's hard to be laudatory about that. I know that the Canadian gov't is every bit as pro-Israel as the U.S. gov't.
I think that building yourself up by slagging off others is pitiful.

At this moment in Canadian history, the left is splintered and the right is united in ONE party. It used to be the other way round.
5 or 10 years from now, that may change.
And I wasn't "slagging anyone off", merely pointing out the differences, (with a bit of editorializing).

Always walking around all high and mighty what with your fancy, plentiful waterfowl that spend all summer wading around in your clean water and smog-free air. Sitting around all day, not awash in gun violence and drive-by shootings and political corruption! Where would you be if the United States military hadn't fought the Viet Cong and won? Probably speaking Vietnamese and playing in the many lovely parks of Ho Chi Minh Province (formerly known as British Columbia) and eating sandwiches made with Asian ingredients atop French-style bread! But you'd all like that, wouldn't you, since so many of you are bilingual and one of those languages is french, which is inherently wrong because everybody knows that France is bad because they lost Vietnam. And your membership in the Commonwealth? Ha! Shows you what you know: participation in the international community that doesn't use cruise missiles is for communists, just like the way you provide quality health care for the poor is commie!

117. I can answer this one |
|
because they get transferred. Many many Canadian workers are employed by American companies, especially in the oilfield. When there's an opening in head office, they always seem to transfer some Canadian. I was told by several people who were transferred they were told it is because Canadians are willing to move, where Americans tend to want to stay in one place. Not to mention, many industries are centralized in the US because of your large population. Where do you think all of our 'stars' move to? Once they make it big in Canada, the first thing they do is move to L.A. I'm sure it's the same in the financial industry. Or was anyway. But it's simply a population thing. You have more population and therefore more opportunity in certain industries. That's all it is.

Its the difference between America and the world. Ive lived in a lot of places, countries, continents - and this is exactly how the rest of the world runs.
America just doesn't want to be like the rest of the world, fair enough in some ways, but it is worth finding out what the rest of us do ?

|
the PM, you would not be here gloating!
If Canada went along with the invasion of Iraq, we would be screwed as all our resources would have to go there to support the troops.
Do not forget we have banking regulations, no fucking way can a person buy a house worth over 1/2 million dollars without having a certain amount of down payment and qualified for a mortgage.
Harper inherited a plus after that Jackass Paul Martin fucked everything up.
Harper changed the status of our soldiers in Afghanistan, that asshole is responsible for so many Canadian soldiers coming home in body bags. Canada was always a country that helped with the rebuilding of a Society, Harper is mini Bush! So sorry that fucker got a majority this time and the only reason for that is that Canada is regressing - we have our own teabaggies here, bet they are rejoicing.
It pains me to see how Canada has become so regressive under Harper and his cohorts.
