People....Weiner's scandal is not about "sex" and if you think it is...
you are wrong and need to quit trying to characterize it that way. It's about a person who chose to be a public leader lying to the people who put trust in his hands.

Weiner not only lied about what he was doing, but he tried to blame others as the culprits when he knew that was not true.

Not only that, go back and listen again to his press conference - in it he ADMITS as far as he knew all women he sent junk to were adults.

People also need to quit comparing our scandals to "theirs." The "he did it, too" excuse is bullshit.

2. Kinda reminds me of the Clinton impeachment days
Edited on Tue Jun-07-11 11:14 AM by classof56
When a very right-wing relative sent me the message, it's not about sex, it's about PERJURY! She hated Clinton, she hates Obama and any other Dem and I no longer correspond with her, but I guess she was right in that it was indeed about PERJURY! Did Weiner commit perjury? I know GWB did and nothing happened to him, but if Weiner has done likewise, he indeed needs to be charged and convicted. Beyond that, try to imagine how little I care.

Peace.

4. No investigation, no deposition, no testimony, and thus no perjury...
No problem.

7. The stalking, the setup, the two-prong roll out reminds me of Rather.
I'm sorry, but ANYONE has the right to lie about sex. I have. NOBODY has any constitutional or any other kind of right to know about my sex life if I have done nothing illegal.

They now plan to exhaustively invade Weiner's privacy to find out if anything was illegal.

HE TOLD A PORN STAR TO LIE!!!!! Duh. TMZ is treating it as if it were under oath. Uh, no. It wasn't. Nobody is required to tell TMZ the truth.

Oh, and the charge against Clinton was NOT perjury, which requires the testimony to be germane. It wasn't because, among other things, it was from a DROPPED CASE WITH NO MERIT. So the charge was merely lying under oath. I'm sorry to see you perpetuate another Republican standard lie.

Perhaps you are confused because Clinton was caught in a well-coordinated PERJURY TRAP which should have landed his prosecutors in jail for collusion.

15. Whoops! Guess I confused the trap with the facts.
I thought the entire impeachment process was totally bogus and I supported Clinton the entire time. Just quoted my relative's assertion making the RW rounds about it not being about sex. It was indeed about sex, of course, and turned out to be a complete waste of time and taxpayer dollars. Certainly did not intend to perpetuate the republicon standard lie, so thanks for correcting me on that. Just wish my relative would have been so enlightened.

Peace.

14. NO. PERJURY DOES NOT EQUAL LYING UNDER OATH.
Boy, the Republicans do their work well.

They are two separate charges. PERJURY is the serious one. PERJURY requires that the testimony be germane. CLINTON WAS NOT CHARGED WITH PERJURY. He lied under oath in a case that was dropped for lack of merit. His testimony was irrelevant.

Weiner was not under any kind of oath. THE CONSTITUTION DOES NOT REQUIRE A SEXUAL PURITY TEST FOR ELECTED OFFICIALS.

19. U.S. Code
When a person, having taken an oath before a competent tribunal, officer, or person, in any case in which a law of the U.S. authorizes an oath to be administered, that he will testify, declare, depose, or certify truly, or that any written testimony, declaration, deposition, or certificate by him subscribed, is true, willfully and contrary to such oath states or subscribes any material matter which he does not believe to be true; or in any declaration, certificate, verification, or statement under penalty of perjury, willfully subscribes as true any material matter which he does not believe to be true; 18 USC

.........

Obviously Weiner has not perjured himself, and I don't believe that Bill Clinton did either.

3. It is about brining down a Democrat
Through his sex pants.

This should have been something that generated late night talk show jokes about a name, a package and a picture. BUT THE media turning it into a giant fiasco with one goal. To bring down another Democrat.

8. No. It is about destroying an effective liberal asset.
And some former CIA geek needs to sit down with our merry congressmen and explain to them how the other side is using terrorist tactics in addition to all the CIA's pretty disinfo tricks to bring them down. That they have to understand that they are watched targets and to behave accordingly.

5. "The "he did it, too" excuse is bullshit." Yep. Ever try that on your parents as a kid?
Ever have your kids try it on you? It's childish when someone's lying, bad judgment, poor behavior is attempted to be excused because somebody else did the same or worse.

Sex can be easily had nowadays and you don't need to go online and post juvenile pictures of yourself and then stupidly think it was private and then publicly try and lie your way out of it rather than confessing right up front.

The general public does hold politicians to a higher standard than the rest of us and just because there are those on the left who don't believe it doesn't make it so. You can't excuse ours because theirs does it too. On pox on all their houses.

11. Personally don't really care much
except that I liked Wiener when he spoke out and stood up for health care for 911 first responders and pointed out that Justice Thomas had lied for years about his wife's income. Now every time I see him I'll think of his pervy tweets. Kinda just ruins it for me. I understand he's human, but wish I didn't have to know about it. :P

along with his previously shifting answers, even in his press conference he seemed to be laying future groundwork in case something else came forward (which it looks like is going to happen).

And I just love your hyperbole and how you take things from one context to another.

A CLOTHED picture of his crotch causes all this controversy? It's fucking ridiculous.

No, he shouldn't have lied. But NO, this is NOT a "sex scandal."

20. With all the pearl clutching I've seen on this site in the past
24 hours, it appears we don't need any help from the GOP to bring down a Dem. Seems like he has pretty much been
convicted and awaiting some kind of excecution from office, from all the comments I've seen. If people get this
upset over a crotch photo, can you imagine if he had .......oh, I dont know.........fill in the blank...........
Is this the 21st century or the 16th century?

22. So, is that going to you your argument? Just a "crotch photo"?
We are all ready seeing the bubbling up of more from this guy.

Not only has he now caused the re-birth of a giant (that bastard Breitbarth), but he has rendered his voice mute and is possibly no longer productive as a national figure.

In other words, this man put his OWN self-interests above all else. Think about that for a moment and let it sink in. He got caught, blamed someone else (even though it was that turd Breitbart) and then lied. Think of the much larger picture. See, it's not just about HIM and his little photos and texts, but he made it just about HIM by his lying and trying to hide it when he knew his goose was cooked.
