I almost got into a fist fight with a right-wing guy (Realtor) this morning.
Edited on Thu Jan-06-11 10:11 AM by BlueJazz
He was looking at my neighbors house and told her to hold on to it ...that prices were going to go WAY up in the next year now that we have the Republicans back in charge. (I was looking at her internet cable outside...she lost the web..etc)

I didn't say a word...it wasn't my place to get involved. (of course)

BUT..She asked: :What to you think about it, Bud ?
---What I'm about to write is not exactly what was said but not very far off..my neighbor is helping me) :)
I said: Well, as I understand it, Prices will drop even more.
Realtor: What do you mean?
Me: I know lots of people that are under-water right now and who are wondering how to even make their next house payment....and soon these houses will be on the Market..adding to the overflow already.
Realtor: That's not true
Me: I beg to differ.. I know just about every one of them ...I see...ah...maybe 50-60 people each week and know most of my clients
(I'm a IT tech and Microsoft engineer and all that crap) ....tell me things that only their hair-dresser knows. :)
Realtor: (Nasty Tone)..Ah..you're full of it.
Me: (just slightly pissed)"I see the economy getting worse now that the same people who caused this down-turn in the economy are now back in charge again...plus the fact that the spread of wealth is going to get worse..much worse.
Realtor: Oh...you're one of those class-war liberals who don't understand that the wealthy built this country.
Me: Oh..Pleeeese..spare me that right-wing talking points..they're not true...the Rich are the ones that started the class wars.
If the wealthy were not getting all the money, the rest of us could just maybe afford their house payments and wouldn't have to put their keys in the mailbox and walk away from their responsibilities ....and houses wouldn't be sold for half their previous value.
Realtor: (Changing direction) George Bush and the Republicans have kept us safe. It cost us money but WE ARE SAFE! (starting to holler).
Me: Safe from what?? untold thousands of people have committed suicide from this down-turn and millions are under such stress that I guarantee their lives are being shortened...ask any doctor about that.
Realtor: No one's attacked any more buildings.
Me: Oh that's brilliant...right.. and if I turn around and clap my hands 3 times every day, no tigers are going to attack me at night.
Realtor: What??
Me: Never mind..The analogy is way over your head.
Realtor: (Balls fist) maybe you need some sense put in your head.
Me: Don't even think about it pal..you wouldn't stand a chance. It would be a very bad move on your part.
(My neighbor is smiling through all of this..She's a FAR-left intelligent woman)
Realtor: turns around and gets in car..leaves..

Oh me...another day in Paradise
:) :)

The asshat realtor wanted her to hold on to her house so he could buy it low...
that's the repug mentality. lies are OK when there is money to be made, and who cares who gets hurt by it.

The brown shirts in our family still think we are fighting them over there so we won't have to fight them here. College graduates too. Propaganda works .

135. Awesome! I played the flute and clarinet, DH played any brass he
could for HS marching band. My son Alex found it relatively easy to go from his 1st sax (tenor) to soprano and baritone (he had a solo in Jazz Band on the Bari).

Just noticed your nick!! Alex plays the bari and tenor in Jazz Band; after Marching Band finished (competition band, came in top 10 @ State). During the 'try-outs' they had too many sopranos and tenors so he took up the baritone. He is working towards a scholarship in state (FL) and wants to do marching band while in University. He loves it and became depressed when he realised he has only 1 more year of HS Marching Band left after this school year.

Their HS has an excellent instructor, but the budget was cut pretty roughly last year so it costs a lot (more!!) to keep him in it. If not for family help not sure if we could have done it on our own. Which is frustrating because it's a great way to keep teens busy. It does take a lot of dedication and team work. But due to cost it also has the effect of keeping kids that cannot afford it from participating.

Would love fundraising ideas (from anyone!! PM me if nec) to help with next year and maybe support a couple of kids that otherwise wouldnt get the opportunity.

Cheers
/rant off ;)

142. Yep...I understand the cost issues as far as school bands go.
Brass and Woodwind Instruments are not cheap and even reeds are expensive.
As far as Fund-raising ..um...We did the usual "Car Wash" thing but now it's winter that might not be possible.
We also played outside in Shopping Centers (We had a small big band, (12-14) ...and raised usually about $150.00
per Saturday.

As for my playing...I worked for CBS as a studio player for 7 years and then went on the road in a band until the
"Rap stuff" started.
I could tell you some stories...regarding the "Stars" and their attitude and talent. :) :)

from Soprano, tenor and baritone. His baritone is much smaller than the instrument in the pic.

Thanks!!

Sandy
Edit: It's a "contra-bass" like you mentioned, never heard of it. Still love to hear (no pun) more about it! I bet those cost a pretty penny. The bass and baritone do.
as an aside, if anyone is in need of an instrument or would like to help out area schools - I've found that pawn shops have nice ones, well priced usually and you can negotiate further if it's been in stock for a while. That was how we were able to get my son's other saxes (tenor was purchased new) a flute and a bass guitar/amp.

Good for you in taking a stand, but no matter what holes you shoot in their beliefs, no matter how many straw arguments you knock down with facts, these people are not going to change their view unless they are directly and/or severely affected by the economy, wars, employment, or any of the other woes now being visited upon our democracy by those who have sought and continue to seek destorying it, reshaping oit for personal gain and getting their piece of the pie in owning some part of it.

However, kudos to you for standing up and speaking up out  I applaud you! :applause:

They couldn't give a damn about anyone other than themselves if they tried.

I can assure you that the Realtor described above will soon be latching on to other unsuspecting folk that are easier game than what he encountered.

The best way to irritate these people is to say no. They cannot take No as an answer. No is a direct insult to there sense of entitlement, which is taking your wealth for their own.

They fabricate their own reality, and when they run into someone that actually says No, they will go out of their way to get back at them, even though it is in violation of the Laws of Nature, Mathmatics, the Legal System, of of Common Sense.

The final straw is when they are forced to spend money to defend their lies. They hate that so much they can explode.

putting people into homes they couldn't afford. Pushing prices higher even as they knew the bottom had to fall out soon.

And now they are left to just lie their butts off daily, telling people it is a good time to buy.

You need to stop getting your talking points from Fox. You must also think Barney Frank is responsible for forcing banks to loan money to poor people. After all, that's what follows in the imaginary world of teabag crazies.

The mortgage companies and banks came to us in 2003 and said "we can now write 0 down, conventional mortgages. We were a little stunned, to say the least. People came to us with pre-approvals from lenders. What would you have us do? Say "no, I forbid you from buying a house that the bank that's loaning you the money says you can afford"? Remember, these people ALL HAD JOBS THEN. The lenders pursuaded the bush administration to loosen up regulations (you remember those, don't you?) You all know what the lenders did with those mortgages, I don't have to educate anyone here about that. The banks made a fortune off these loans when they packaged and sold them, at the same time removing all liability from themselves.

Some of the people that ended up defaulting were in an adjustable mortgage. They were told that they could refinance in a few years, and traditionally properties would go up in value (they went down) and they could move into a fixed rate, but they were also told (in writing) that there were no guarantees that financing would be available. Realtors do not push buyers into adjustable mortgages, that is between the lender and the buyer. I sold very few houses on adjustables. Most people were afraid of them.

So, you claim all us Realtors "knew the bottom would fall out soon"? What, I have a crystal ball? And WE are responsible for pushing prices higher? Demand causes prices to go higher. Now, we just "lie our butts off"? You know, you can choose to educate yourself, or you can just remain ignorant.

147. How do Realtors control prices?
The value of something is "what someone is willing to pay". It still has to appraise when getting a mortgage. Realtors have very little sway when dealing with appraisers. The best we could ever do was point out a comparable sale that they had missed. Your comments are ignorant. Actually, buyers' agency (proposed by Ralph Nader) has us working FOR buyers to get the best deal on property. 2006 prices "completely unsustainable"? YES! History of market correction? YES! Bottom falling out and prices returning to 1980's levels? Never in a million years did anyone think that would happen. We were unaware of the manipulation going on in the banking industry and had no idea the job market would get so bad. You still haven't explained how Realtors "screwed" you or how we "knew" or how we "control prices". You are like a Republican trying to explain how tax breaks for billionaires creates jobs. Plenty of noise, but no real facts. Investors and speculators drove prices up in Sunbelt states. Pre-builds were big in FL, AZ, NV, CO, mostly condo complexes. Investors would plunk down cash before anything was built, then sell for $100,000 more when it was finished. Those were the areas that got hit the hardest. Yes, there are unscrupulous people (probably Republicans) in our business, but demonizing an entire industry based on what a few greedy hacks are doing?

110. The law in most states requires a realtor to disclose to the seller when they
want to purchase a home for their own account. Then it would be up to the seller to evaluate if the realtor's offer is a fair offer or if the seller believes he can do better if the home is sold to a different party.

Do you reeaallllly think it is easy to flip a home these days with prices continually going downhill?

I assure they are not many realtors flipping properties in today's market. It is highly risky.

145. Yes it seems you can do anything as long as you disclose.
And if you get screwed then it is your fault because dud bit evaluate wisely.
But still if you have some extra cash and buy low when it is high you make a killing....that is how it is done.
A true story I know of....during the depression one man that was wise enough to not have all his money in risky investments and had cash used the opportunity to go to the Ozarks where people were dirt poor but had a lot of land....he bought up 50,000 acres of mostly timbered land for something like 50 cents an acre...and over time cut and sold the timber and made a fortune that way....and still owned the land....and that land is worth a lot more now than then.
And I am convinced that is what is happening today....they are using all that cash they have to buy up real estate.

I suppose since it didn't effect him in a manner the same way that buildings collapsing on tv can, it wasn't a big deal.

They make it up as they go along.

yet nobody
especially from the so-called the "Camel Club"
was ever arrested, much less convicted.

I guess it's really easy to intimate that a now-dead man did it.

39. Welcome to DU, and not just anthrax
the DC Sniper was a terrorist
There have been nearly monthly attacks on various family planning clinics around the country.
The assassination of Dr. George Tiller was a terrorist act
there have been a whole slew of others since Obama took office (some guy flew a plane into an IRS building, no?)

or, do they not count as terrorist attacks because all of the attackers were Americans, and most of them white Christian males?

72. Good point
Also, what about 9/11 itself? Bush sure didn't keep America safe after that day. (An aggravating hypothetical: Would a 9-11 have happened to President Gore?)

He also did a terrible job keeping the troops safe. Bush' decision to go to wars is responsible for the deaths of 4,500 patriotic young Americans. And about 800 contractors, and what, maybe 100 journalists? To say nothing of the permanently scarred and wounded.

I love the smell of corporate fascism in the morning.

63. Old GOP Talking Point
You're right, of course, that they certainly didn't "keep us safe" from the attacks of 9/11. But even if one grants that, well, ok, 9/11 was unprecedented, possibly no administration would have seen it coming, etc. -- even granting that (for the sake of argument): to argue that because another attack akin to 9/11 didn't happen, that this is somehow evidence that "Bush kept us safe" is simply ludicrous on its face. But if they really insist on going down that particular road, it is worth reminding them that, apparently then, so has President Obama kept us safe in his two years in office.

28. "the wealthy built this country"?!
No, the poor immigrants built this country. Were the wealthy out there laying the first railroad tracks? Were they digging the coal so steelworkers could manufacture? Were the wealthy building bridges, houses, tunnels?

No. The poor were.

The wealthy financed some things, but only be cause they expected a profit.

& as for "Bush kept us safe"... shit :puke:
that is not the duty of the president. Safety may the the consequence of good (and attentive: 'who could have imagined they'd fly a jet into a building?', 'The Aug. 6 Presidential Daily Brief --PDB-- was 'just history'. *grimace*) governance, but it is NOT the duty of the president

It's funny how all these rabid right-wingers always do the 'bob and weave' when you start to show how uninformed they are. In your case you were nailing the guy on 'real estate matters' so he bobs and weaves to 'National Security' where he figures he will be on more solid ground. Of course he was wrong again. You see this from right-wingers all the time they will just move from subject to subject because other than talking points they really don't know anything about what they are talking about.

They will take all accusations against them and flip them to say it's the Democrats doing who are doing it.

Of they will take simple language and flip it - like the death panel.

There are very brilliant, creative people leading them - and they get sign making guidance, but sooner than later they absolutely cannot use logic to make, back, or complete a logic path.

Their brilliant, creative genius leaders should work on that, but it is impossible because it is all in the sound bite. Their are no skills to make a case.

All argument is based on interruption to lob another point.

33. You should have reminded him, since he brought it up,
that 9/11 happened on Bush's watch. That on his watch, an entire U.S. city was destroyed, even though they had nearly a week of advance warning. And that so far, Obama has kept us safe for more than a year longer than Bush managed to do.

And, that terrorism has increased all over the globe so much that the Bush administration tried to hide the statistics.

And if you really wanted to make him mad, you should have told him that 'deregulation' was the cause of the economic collapse and that the market needs to be regulated because we tried it their way and it's been disastrous for this country.

Maybe next year when he's out of a job his faith in republicans will not be so naive.

Other than that, well done. I find them a waste of time. The only way they will learn is to lose their jobs under a Republican administration.

62. You focus on making your world a better place and...
Edited on Thu Jan-06-11 04:39 PM by Grinchie
You ensure that you keep up the pressure on those that would like to make theirs into their own Hell of Earth.

There are lots of ways to keep the pressure up.. Unflattering facts, close scrutiny, sunshine, complaints to regulatory authorities, and generally knowing everything you can know about someone and being able to spot the BS from one mile away.

I learned this from the example of Integrated Pest Management or IPM. Agriculture today is focused on Monocrop -- Thousands of Acres of one plant, Corn for example. When grown this way, once a pest gets a foothold, all it needs to do is walk from plant to plant to plant. It never has to expend any energy looking for food.. It just has a huge world of food.

In nature, plants really don't grow in Monocrop. Their is usually a great diversity of plants int between one another. The insects in this environment actually have to expend energy to find food. They have to fly, crawl, pass through spider webs or other hostile zones, expending energy on the way. Also, they may not make it past the spider web or the hungry bird.

This is the key to the asshats that pollute our society. Make it cost more to behave that way than it does to be a good citizen. It's that simple.

Unfortunately, these values are not taught to our kids these days. When we reward these criminals but making it extremely profitable and easy to continue their crimes, they grown more numerous and voracious.

People need to stand up and assert themselves by making life miserable for this behavior. One step at a time.

119. Realtors are actually largely responsible for the housing crisis.
http://www.opensecrets.org/orgs/summary.php?id=D000000062

They heavily lobbied congress to make it easier for people who couldn't afford homes to be able to.
Many laws were changed due to their greed. They had their cake and ate it and now many of them are
looking for other jobs because there are no commissions in a crashed housing market.

125. "Kept us safe"
The 3000+ killed on September 11th, 2001 might disagree with that assessment of BushCo.

That concept is a huge propaganda success - the notion that the people that allowed the worst terrorist attack on US soil somehow "kept us safe" makes Orwell chuckle, I am sure. We need to call them on their bullshit every time and not allow this flat-out lie to gain any more ground.

OP, great smackdown!

127. Kudos!!
Good for you! And, as the earliest responder said - 'that's why I don't engage with strangers either'. I look at it this way, when I meet a stranger, there's a 50-50 chance that he/she voted for bush and the other war criminals so why bother to waste a breath on them?

129. I get where you are coming from
But there is little point in arguing with the uneducable. There is a moment of satisfaction one gets causing them to stutter, stammer, and fume, but they will learn nothing from it. No person can argue these folks out of the misconceptions on which they found their entire view of reality. Reality itself might be able to pull this off, but only if conditions get much, much worse for all of us. Even then, some will go to their graves "death of a salesman" style, doing all the wrong stuff and bitterly disappointed that somehow it never worked.

All we can do is ignore them, beat them soundly at the polls, and use the power to make the country a better place. Their biggest concern is that somehow we will do all "the wrong things" and it will actually work. We should not disappoint.

Democratic politicians. You have been conned into fighting the GOP and tea-party nuts when you truly have a one-party system. Horrible to watch Americans futilely fighting each other instead of the Insurance Companies and the corporate lobbyists and Wall Street.
