I love how we are all waiting for the “responsible elders” of the Republican party to shoo off the cuckoo birds running for their presidential nomination, and usher in someone of sound mind and body. What a fanciful construction.
The dilemma is usually posed as whether the elders still have enough sway in the party to do the engineering required. MY question is: what evidence do we have that these responsible elders are responsible in any way? Let’s just look at the platform these reasonable people have been inflicting on us:
1) Deficits under Republican presidents do not matter.
2) Tax cuts for the wealthy are Job One, irrespective of the deficits they cause.
3) Tax cuts for the wealthy are Job Two, irrespective of the long-term debt.
4) When we get a Democratic president, the deficit and debt are suddenly the only things that matter, EXCEPT if it might interfere with tax cuts for the wealthy.
