DEXTER, Maine — Maine State Police say four bodies have been found inside a Dexter home after members of the department’s tactical team entered the house Monday afternoon.

The bodies were identified those of Steven and Amy Lake and their two children, Coty, 13, and Monica, 12. All four were found in the living room on the first floor of the house at 173 Shore Road, according Maj. Gary Wright of the state police. He said it appeared that Steven Lake, 37, used a shotgun to kill his wife, children and then himself.

Law enforcement officers from several agencies were dispatched to the residence after reports of gunshot fire early Monday morning.

A Dexter police officer, Kevin Wintle, visited the residence to check on the well-being of the family after Amy Lake didn’t show up for work and the children didn’t arrive at school. A neighbor said Amy Lake lived at the house with her two children.

6. A gun kills in seconds. This man simply loaded it and shot everyone to death.
This HAS to be stopped NOW!!!!

12. Read the article. This was not a hot blooded moment. He should not have been near that house...
If the gun were not there, there still would have been a serious and deadly problem.

16. the police and the judge should have handled it better.
she moved away from him, had a PFA on him, he followed her around and she reported it to the police. I'd say the failing here, is on the police and the judge who granted him bail.

4. Once again we see that handguns are NOT the only problem. We need to...
register all weapons and have the owners put through a through exam for mental illness
and a family history of same, along with drug and alcohol testing, for possible addicts.

8. He was illegally in possession of the weapon...
and had also filled the house with fire accellerants, he would have killed them with a hammer if it was all that he had. He went there on a "mission" and there is no law in the world that will prevent a lone, determined individual from committing acts like this.

13. And apparently a mental exam to buy gas, in this case...
maybe a smaller mental exam to buy a hammer, a more extensive one for a knife.
For poisons, probably a full one.

9. What a terrible act of violence.

Even though I've read up on family annihilators, on a gut level I just cannot understand anyone who would destroy his family -- his children.

15. A lot of people do..
It's the exceptions we hear about, otherwise suicide is so common as to be unremarkable.

17. That's what I don't get!
You hear about these situations, unfortunately, too often. Why must the man (not always, but usually the man)always take out his entire family because he's despondent?
