iPhone app creator criticized for effect named after the N-word
13 hours and 36 minutes ago

CLEVELAND - The creator of an iPhone app used to manipulate and add effects to photos is under fire for using a racial slur in the name of a special effect.

The app, called “Picture Effect Magic,” is available in a free and paid version in the Apple App Store. The latest version is 1.8 and has a post date of June 10, 2011.

In the list of possible photo effects is one called, “54 N****r-brown.” In selecting this effect, it makes the image a brownish tint. In the list, it is near other similar effects that make the image purple, blue or warm.

A NewsChannel5 viewer brought this to our attention after downloading and using the app.

1. Well since the "The N-Word" means black. I'm comfortable with...
...labling the creator of that list a racist.

2. No. The word that means black is NEGRO. It is pronounced nA grO.
It is Spanish. In this country, the word was mispronounced nE grO.

The word in the app was a slur, meant to demean and dehumanize.

4. Try latin.
And I thought that was the point I was making when I said I was comfortable with calling it racist.

N* brown quite obviously means n* coloured, not black-brown.

5. I read the whole article and your whole post. I'm confused. I cuaght that you
said it was racist. I also thought I caught that you were referring to "N****r" as it was printed in the article and the OP as "the word".

I guess you can paint a great big "whoosh!" above my screen name on this one. I don't get it.

7. Just wondering if anyone noticed
that the creator of that app has what appears to be a Chinese name.

Which would suggest to me that the guy might have heard the word but not be familiar with its history in the US.

But hey...don't let that little detail stop anyone from jumping up and down and yelling "RACIST!!!!"

sigh...
