House Democratic leaders could take the first steps to strip Rep. Anthony Weiner of his seat on the Energy and Commerce Committee as early as tomorrow as part of a larger push to force him out of office, according to Democratic sources familiar with the situation. Party leaders plan to meet at noon Thursday to discuss the matter.
"That is under active consideration," said one source familiar with the discussion.
Under party rules, the caucus would have to post notice of a decision to consider removing Weiner from his sole committee a week in advance, so any decision by Democratic leaders would take time to germinate. A Democratic leadership aide emphasized that the meeting is not limited to a discussion of Weiner's committee assignments and is likely to include more general discussion of what to do about the New York congressman.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called on Weiner to resign on Saturday, along with Reps. Steve Israel, the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.
