Japan good (sort of relatively) news on nuclear situation.
Please do not attack or claim I am pro-nuke or search for separately scary news to counter this. If you are tempted todo so, you might not be fully understanding of what it is like to NEED to look for some bright news...

You can make any comment you like or even refute the truth of this story. Please just keep at least light padding on your hands for this sensitive issue.

US: spent fuel pool never went dry in Japan quake

WASHINGTON (AP) - Water used to cool radioactive waste at the stricken nuclear complex in Japan did not dry up, as earlier feared, U.S. regulators said Wednesday in a reversal of a claim that pitted U.S. officials against Japan in the days after that country's nuclear disaster.

U.S. officials, most notably Nuclear Regulatory Chairman Gregory Jaczko, had warned that all the water was gone from one of the spent fuel pools at Japan's troubled nuclear plant, which would have raised the possibility of widespread nuclear fallout. Loss of cooling water in the reactor core could have exposed highly radioactive spent fuel rods, increasing the threat of a complete fuel meltdown and a catastrophic release of radiation.

Japanese officials had denied the pool was dry and reported that the plant's condition was stable.

On Wednesday, U.S. officials said newly obtained video shows that the spent fuel pool at Unit 4 at the Fukushima Dai-ichi complex probably did not go dry, as Jaczko had insisted in March.

1. Not surprising. There's been a lot of questionable information going around on this. nt

2. OK. It wasn't "dry".

I didn't see anything in article saying how much water was in it...at a minimum. Nor how much of the rods were exposed.

3. Uh oh, the anti-nuke folks aren't going to like this.
It might hurt their narrative that most of Japan is soon going to become uninhabitable for the next 6000 years.

4. You're right, I can't even begin to tell you how upset I am about the fact
that a shitload of radiation didn't spew into the air. Yep, damn shame it is.

I know it may strike you as hard to believe, but the reason I'm anti-nuke is because I think it's really stupid to put so many lives at risk just to power our homes when there are other alternatives out there. So the fact that lots of lives have been spared? Actually, I see that as a GOOD thing, shocking as it may be to you. It's good to know that even more people won't die for you nuke lover's stupidity.

6. Truly an energy form in which they don't even know how to dispose of the by-products safely
is irredeemably short-sighted and stupid.

10. Yep, using nuclear fission to turn water into steam for electricity is pretty stupid.
Almost as stupid as burning millions-year-old plant and animal remains and spewing tons of toxic chemicals and carbon into the atmosphere instead.

5. God, right, this now proves beyond *a shadow of a doubt* how *totally safe* nuclear power is!
Your trip to Fukushima to swim in the ocean is, doubtless, back on for August!

7. Like, ummm, this kind of stupid back and forth is the LAST thing I wanted to see on this thread.
Do we (you actually and the poster you responded to) have to descend so deep into the dumb at EVERY opportunity?

8. Well, as someone who actually lives fairly close to the reactors
I can say that this is a welcome bit of news.

11. Nah, me and Art are in the fray. YOU are the one who, above it, thinks...
that any old stupid snarky comment is fine and the issue is just more fodder for his entertainment.
