Danish right-wing populists have gained support amid the ongoing debate over a controversial plan to introduce tighter border controls, according to a poll Tuesday.

The Danish People's Party polled 15.2 per cent according to the Voxmeter survey commissioned by Danish news agency Ritzau. Two weeks ago the party scored 12 per cent. The poll was conducted from June 6 to 13.

'The debate over the plan suits the Danish People's Party,' political analyst Nils Krause-Kjaer told Ritzau. 'It tries to portray itself as protector of the ordinary citizen and taking a stand for little Denmark against big countries and the European Union.'

The European Commission and neighbouring Germany have voiced concern over the border plan and its ramifications though the government maintains that it would not violate EU rules, such as the agreement governing the border-free Schengen zone.

... the Social Liberals and the Red-Green Alliance opposed the tightened border controls from the beginning.

“The goal with Schengen is to ensure free movement across the national borders. Therefore you cannot create provisions that function as border controls,” she told Politiken. “I don’t think they can implement the agreement and be part of Schengen at the same time.”

1. And in response to criticism: "Danish populist leader slams border plan critics"
Denmark's right-wing populist leader Thursday slammed neighbouring Germany, along with the European Union, for criticizing a controversial plan to introduce tighter border controls.

'The EU is really scared. Denmark is to be set in its place, regardless of the costs,' the eurosceptic Kjaersgaard added.

The European Commission and neighbouring Germany have voiced concern over the border plan and its ramifications, though Copenhagen maintains that it would not violate European rules on movement, such as the agreement governing the border-free Schengen zone.

Kjaersgaard indicated she was not a strong supporter of Denmark remaining part of Schengen.
