Medi-Share: Christian Family Healthcare
What is Medi-Share?

Medi-Share is a community of more than 40,000 Christians who follow the biblical model of sharing and paying each other's medical bills much like the early church did 2,000 years ago. And as a not-for-profit ministry that promotes healthy biblical lifestyles, participation is affordable.

At least they are devoted to helping their neighbors, so long as they are also "biblical Christians." That's more than a lot of Tea Party types are willing to commit to.

I wonder if there is something to this model we heathens could adopt -- as we simultaneously pursue universal healthcare -- but more all inclusive? Something...anything to get away from Big Insurance as a first step.

:hippie:

I'm actually more interested in healthcare co-ops, not insurance co-ops; insurance in and of itself seems irrelevant and corrupt nowadays.

Of course, many of us haven't had health insurance for a long time, so we're doing our part already in that regard. ;)

Thought DUers may find this interesting.

:hi:

1. Is this a way to get national healthcare going?
Just say it's based on a "Biblical model" and the rightwing will approve it?

2. They'd have too many exclusions and requirements for most citizens to participate...
but at least it's a move in a more cooperative direction, albeit for a small group.

I wouldn't say it's progressive at all (though I am finding a lot of VERY progressive Christian organizations, just fyi), but I found it interesting.

:)

4. This is interesting but I wonder how many severe patients they are
covering. How many nursing home bills are they paying? People like my daughter who needs foster care - meds - tube feeding supplies - diapers - physical therapy and medical visits from home health as well as doctors of all kinds? This little group would be blown away with one child like my daughter.

My church was talking about the high cost of medical care and thinking of something like that. We are a small church. I stood up and suggested they rethink their plans. My daughter alone would use up their entire budget for the year and we would probably need more. And there are two children like her in my church.

5. "insurance in and of itself seems irrelevant and corrupt nowadays"--that's Teabagger talk!

just like "Don't touch my junk" or "Get out of Libya" or "the Patriot Act is unconstitutional"
(if you believe some Loyalists here...)

7. I'm wondering, does the rate go up for 50+ year old people
and has there been any medical bankruptcies while on it? I love that they believe in community and sharing. We all need to find that space at this time.
