You "rein" it in, not "reign" it in. I've seen that several times in the last week, including on some blogs by literate people who should know better.

Sorry. I've been stifling that for a long time. It is the one consistent misspelling that irks me to no end. I make mistakes too sometimes but that one reappears time and time again.

33. Exactly
I know some very intelligent people who can't spell, but it does bother me a bit that people don't take advantage of their spell check. Because of spell check, I've found out that I had been misspelling some words my entire life.

For the most part, I try to listen to what people are trying to say. It is easy to get distracted by grammar and end up missing the point.

19. It is too "hypocracy"
when you're referring to a government that is run by hypocrites, like we have. It's like a kleptocracy -- government run by thieves -- which we also have. Or a corporatocracy -- government run by corporations -- which we also have. Or a democracy -- a government run by the people -- certainly you remember what that was.

31. and may I just mention "as opposed to" as distinguished from
"as distinguished from"?

Hypocracy is in no way opposed to hypocrisy. There is no hostility between the two words--one is simply a misspelling of the other. All you often want to do is distinguish between two things, not set them in opposition to each other. When you use hypocrisy, everyone reads straight on to the end of your sentence and the point you are making. When you use "hypocracy" we understand that spelling is not your first talent *and* that you choose to ignore the spell checker that is built into most word processors these days. The spell checker is usually correct, but not in all cases. If you throw "nanothermite" at the spell checker, it will quietly inform you that you should check the spelling in case you've made a mistake. In this case you haven't, but for "hypocracy", you have.

And frankly, a total disregard for the commonly accepted spelling of common words is the sort of attitude I expect from, and I hope you will forgive me, the Tea Baggers.

If I may quote Paul McCartney in this context, he might say: "Help us to always care." We should care about our fellow man, our fellow animals, the women and children and frogs and honey bees, and we should care about the correct use of one of the most glorious languages on this earth--English. Go forth and listen to the gentle promptings of your spell checker, and you will be blessed with the grace of the comprehension and respect of your readers.

39. Thanks. It's no biggy to do a quick spell-check on an OP or post here.
Only the trolls or the terminally self-absorbed (and we've got plenty of both here) seem unable or unwilling to perform that simple task. However, both are very willing to label those of us who suggest that simple task as the "spelling police".

43. I gave up on the misspellings and grammatical errors
long ago.

I'm a retired English teacher so it wasn't an easy thing for this old lady to do. Sometimes I still leave the site immediately (and come back later in the day) when I see a particularly egregious spelling or grammar error.

There was a concerted effort here a few years ago to try and improve the situation, but it failed.

Besides, some of the nicest, most generous people I've met in life can't spell worth a lick. :)

So, take my advice. Just ignore it. You'll have a better day.

Hypocrisy!!

War lies?? To our faces??

Nancy?? Debbie?? Obama??

Did they EVER express even comparable outrage over such lies?

Clarence Thomas has lied to all of us on his Tax Returns.

Maybe if I am patient, we WILL be hearing soon from the Democratic leadership on the serious matter of the lies told by a SC Justice over the course of 20 years indicating that his votes on critical issues that impact all Americans for generations to come, may very well have bought and paid for.
