Scott Sisters Free After 16 Years In Prison
Imprisoned sisters whose life sentences were suspended on condition that one donates a kidney to the other released

JACKSON, Miss. -- Two imprisoned sisters whose life sentences were suspended on the condition that one donates a kidney to the other have been released from a Mississippi prison.

Jamie and Gladys Scott left the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Rankin County at about 8 a.m. Friday after being incarcerated for 16 years.

Friday afternoon, the sisters' attorney, Chokwe Lumumba, said he will drive them to Pensacola, Fla., where they will live with their mother and children. Once in Florida, Jamie and Gladys Scott will be required to check in with prison officials there. They have until Tuesday to do so, Florida officials said.

Jamie Scott, 36, is on dialysis, which officials said costs the state about $200,000 a year. Gov. Haley Barbour agreed to release her because of her medical condition. But 38-year-old Gladys Scott's release order says one of the conditions she must meet is to donate the kidney to her sister within one year.
