from Alien 3

Ripley: Because they won't kill it. They might kill you just for having seen it but they're not gonna kill it.
Aaron: That is crazy! That is horse shit! They will not kill *us*!
Ripley: When they first heard about this thing, it was "crew expendable". The next time they sent in marines - they were expendable too. What makes you think they're gonna care about a bunch of lifers who found God at the ass-end of space? You really think they're gonna let you interfere with their plans for this thing? They think we're - we're crud. And they don't give a fuck about one friend of yours that's - that's died. Not one.

Just seems apropos this week. It's not the monster we should fear but the corporation which would unleash it.

2. It did seem to be an apt metaphor
for the here and now. Funny where you can find pearls of wisdom.

5. When I saw Alien in the thee-ayter (as they call them in S. Philly)
and her name was Ripley, I thought it was a stroke of genius-wit given that most of America even at that time, did not know who Robert Ripley was, or the effect that his "comic strip" had upon America when it was being published and discussed on the radio and in newspapers and later, on TV. I had done a research project on him when I was in high school b/c of his political beliefs that the worst thing that happened in the 20th Century was the overthrow of the Chinese government by the Communists. He was a pretty rabid RWer for his day; now he'd be considered with the McGovern wing of the Democratic Party.
