3. Sorry about that, Jane. I hope Current will expand rapidly, and |
|
will also cover Canada before long.
I wonder if this will be of any consolation to you. I was in Montreal for a week 20 years ago. The nightly news they had was incomparably superior to what we are used to having here in the U.S. It's my belief that those Canadians who are interested know far more of the important things going on in the U.S. than most Americans do.

17. It's a consolation, to a point...... |
|
I tend, actually, to get a lot of my American news from Brit sources, too....and Der Speigel.
And yes, I have noticed that I am more aware of what's going on in the world than a lot of Americans...and Canadians. I'm interested, and I have the time to look.

4. Unfortunately for Keith he is in for a rude awakening. People will not go out of their way watch him |
|
When he was on MSNBC he had a platform to reach a wider audience, not he will truly be in a echo chamber. He is not as popular as he believes himself to be and was overpaid by Current tv.
I use to like him but he has gotten way to arrogant and full of himself.

5. From what he says and the way he says it, it can be deduced that |
|
there is a rebellious streak in him. (A good quality to have in a journalist, if not overdone). At Current I understand that he has been given a free hand to do as he pleases. Now that there is noone breathing down his neck and telling him what he can and cannot say, he is his own boss.
Let's wait and see how things turn out. I'm pretty hopeful that KO will be good -- if not better than ever.

6. Current is a great thing. Keith will be another excellent feature |
|
and aside from his show, he is now in charge of their growing news division. Many people are not aware of the superb documentary work Current has been doing for some time now, but lots of us have been watching all along. When journalists Ling and Lee were arrested by North Korea, they were working for Current Vanguard, which will be airing directly following Olbermann. Each episode of Vanguard is the best hour of TV on that week. Nothing in TV is certain, but this is the sort of informed risk Keith or anyone would be crazy to refuse. The only way to become head of a major News department in TV while not being a total tool is to grow your own damn network. And grow it will. That would be my bet. And just to put it in perspective, MSNBC is not exactly the height of popularity, cable news in general is a relatively tiny backwater of the TV world, and the pitiful numbers of even the highest rated shows on cable news are not growing much. The very fact that Current is not an infernal all news and commentary factory is greatly in its favor in terms of gaining the huge, potential audience that simply does not watch cable news much. That audience does not like cable news outlets for good reason. Current has other content, of all kinds. At MSNBC, of course, his ratings were lower than O'Reilly's on Fox, but in turn, O'Reilly's ratings were lower than cartoon reruns and other content on many other cable channels in the same time slot. Keith gives up a small share of a dry market, gets potentially the best new job in TV News since they called people into the office and said 'We are going to have news on TV now.' The people who made this deal, all parties, were doing something different and I think brilliant. Who ever put Keith and Current together thought outside the idiot box. And for Keith to take the chance on Current just tells me he is as clever as he sometimes seems to be. His agent is no fool either.

8. Agreed on all points. Great post. This is... |
|
... a huge opportunity for Current and Olbermann to be creative. I don't think it's just about Countdown...which I love to watch BTW. This is a chance to showcase real NEWS...something that is fading fast on other outlets.
I wish both Keith Olbermann and Al Gore the best of luck on this new venture. :patriot:

21. Yes, and the whole show -- success or failure -- depends almost entirely on KO |
|
Edited on Sun Jun-19-11 04:31 PM by Cal33
alone. It's a situation where he could try to reverse the century-long Republican efforts at dumbing-down our nation, in order to manipulate us more easily, and instead, create a REAL NEWS STATION, where everybody goes to learn the truth. He could turn Current TV into what Americans might, in time, refer to as "THE News Station."
I can't help but feel that KO will bring all his ingenuity, talent, experience and hard work to bear in making Current TV become such a station. Here's the one great opportunity of his life-time. Will he make it? What else could he do but try?

12. I hope the time off has helped Keith reset. |
|
You're right that he was getting too full of himself. What made him great was simple, factual observation, but towards the end on MSNBC he kept leaning more and more toward this almost caricature-ish bloviating, and it showed that he thought he knew better than almost everybody about everything. I hope he's come back to himself a bit over the break, and we'll get to see classic Keith back in action.

one of his bosses was telling him what to do, or not do.
And the "time off" you referred to might have been a very busy one in terms of setting up a new team, and everything else that he hopes will make a success of his new venture.

31. Actually, I think he and Gore are creating a new model for media for news access & coverage |
|
And I think that is very exciting and has a great deal of potential.
Will it be small at first and have some growing pains?
I think that's likely.
But it's exciting to be able to see it at its inception.

|
http://ready-tv.com/?p=109It's down now, but they say it'll be back up in time for Keith's debut. Good place to bookmark if you don't get Current (you should ask for it anyway) and want to watch. But the network itself will also offer each show as podcasts after the fact.

With Current not widely available, why the hell have they made it so difficult to find their live stream? I looked earlier today and couldn't find anywhere on their website to stream live. Yours is the first link I've seen, so many thanks! It's sort of a "duh" on the part of Current, though.
