TWO THIRDS OF AMERICANS WOULD SUPPORT GAY PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE
TWO THIRDS OF AMERICANS WOULD SUPPORT GAY PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE | A new Gallup poll shows that only 32 percent of Americans are against voting for someone who is gay or lesbian for president. In 1978, that number was 74 percent. This finding reinforces what Victory Fund President Chuck Wolfe said yesterday: there could be a viable gay candidate for president in the next 20 years.

1. That's a good sign for the LGBT community.
Atheists on the other hand have a ways to go.

6. You mean just like the 54% of Californians in 2008 that were polled as supporting gay marriage only
Edited on Tue Jun-21-11 09:56 AM by 4lbs
to see Prop 8 pass 52% to 48%?

That same poll (an LA Times poll conducted in May of 2008) showed that 70% of Californians under the age of 30 supported same sex marriage but only 36% of those over the age of 60 did.

Guess which voting bloc was more reliable to actually get out and vote EVERY YEAR? Yup, the older one. Only about half of those under the age of 30 (18 to 29) voted in 2008, while about 90% of those over 60 did.

Maybe the poll should only cover those Americans that REGULARLY vote, in EVERY ELECTION, even in NON-PRESIDENTIAL YEARS.

It would give a better and more realistic indication of the true support in an actual vote. I know for sure it would not be anywhere near that 67% figure. Closer to the 50% range.

Come on now. 94% would vote for a black candidate? 93% would vote for a woman? 89% would vote for a Jewish or Latino candidate? Yeah sure. Show me an actual national vote where that happens and I'll believe.

There are still the 25 to 30% hardcore right of the VOTERS that only have eyes for a white, male, Christian. Anyone else is just too different.

What people say in polls and what they do in the voting booth are often two different things. Until the public statements and their private voting booth actions match, I'll remain skeptical.

7. I call Bullshit! They'll say they'd support a gay candidate, but when the curtain closes
Many would not be able to pull the lever.

Before Obama was elected how many said they'd vote for a candidate of color, but how many actually did and how many now hate him for nothing but his color?

8. 20% of (R)s and (I)s won't support a Mormon, and 27% of (D)s wont!?!?
I have trouble with this one.

Are we a party that judges people on their religion? I thought we were more inclusive than that.

Unless these answers were specific toward Mitt Romney and John Huntsman, I am a bit taken back by (D)s being less tolerant of another's religion than (R)s.

I suppose the good news is that if Romney or Huntsman win the nomination then 20% of the (R) and (I) vote is not available to them.

^snip^

The new Gallup poll, conducted June 9-12, finds nearly 20% of Republicans and independents saying they would not support a Mormon for president. That is slightly lower than the 27% of Democrats saying the same.
