Know Your Political History. Who Were The "Elves"?
Edited on Tue Jun-21-11 01:52 PM by KittyWampus
In the course of discussing Weiner, it seems a lot of DU'ers either weren't around when the Republican "Elves" and their activities were finally made public or have forgotten just how far they went in smearing Clinton.

We can all say that Clinton, like Weiner, gave them ammunition but the fact remains, there were/are Republican operatives behind the scenes INVENTING scandals for the Left. See- ACORN and Shirley Sherrod.

Irregardless of what Weiner stupidly did, we need to be aware of rightwing smear artists in RL and on the Net.

..............................

The David in this interview is David Brock who wrote "Blinded By The Right".

GLENN: But there’s a bigger piece to the Paula Jones lawsuit which fundamentally changed this country, and probably explains a great deal why we have George W. in office, which was in fact, the idea behind the lawsuit was as you say and as others have said, was to get Clinton in a deposition to ask him about all kinds of questions about his personal life. Talk to us about that strategy. And who, “the elves”, were involved with that strategy?

DAVID: Yeah, the Jones case really became the vehicle, the center, of the conspiracy. I was friends with two of the three conservative legal advisors who were secretly advising Paula Jones. She had lawyers of record, and then she had these conservative lawyers who called themselves the elves who were doing the real work and guiding the strategy and they were all connected through the Federalist Society, which is another Richard Mellon Scaife-funded organization that is a very influential network of conservative lawyers, and they were all linked through that. It was explained to me in 1997, months before anybody knew the name Monica Lewinsky, by the lead elf, if you will, George Conway, I asked him, because obviously having published the original article, I was always curious about whether Paula Jones was telling the truth or not about what happened in that hotel room. He told me that he did not believe Paula Jones’ claims, and then he went on to explain what the purpose of what they were doing was, which was to gather up every rumor and negative story they could about Clinton - over four years in which they spent hundreds of thousand of dollars - and then to confront him in deposition form with that. So the perjury trap that was eventually laid for Clinton was explained to me months before it happened, so that’s really what that case was all about.

GLENN: And that’s how we got to Lewinsky.

DAVID: Absolutely. Lewinsky was turned up in the course of the Jones suit. That led to Lewinsky, and that led to impeachment.

GLENN: Now, what was Independent Counsel Ken Starr’s role in the Arkansas Project? He played a role in that and then he of course turned around and pursued Bill Clinton in his Independent Counsel capacity. What was Ken Starr’s role in the project?

1. Thanks for the reminder.
I didn't know they called themselves 'elves' but the campaign against Clinton was one of their first near victories.

The strategy has not changed much. Weiner was targeted in much the same way, because he was going after Thomas.

The 'elves' were let loose the minute he called for Thomas' recusal from the HC cases coming before the SC.

This is a story in itself which should be covered by the media, regardless of the 'targets'. Because it is a serious threat to this democracy to have this army of well-funded dirty tricksters who spend their time targeting, mostly liberals trying to make this country better.

They will keep doing it until the country decides they do not want this kind of dirty politics steering the direction of this country.

3. Unless I'm misremembering, one was Ann Coulter
Have to reread "Blinded by the Right" sometime soon.

You'll find the name Laurence Silberman in that book, a mentor to Brock back in his slimy Andrew-Britbart-of-the-Bush41-era days, before the contradictions got to him.

Look that same name up at Robert Parry's site http://consortiumnews.com/

You'll find an often-overlooked component of how the RW has pushed their agenda so completely: their ideological drive on the judiciary.

7. Ratfucking -
A long-standing GOPer favorite. They can't win on ideas so they resort to ratfucking, vote suppression, BBV, propaganda organs like FAUX/Rush, and outright lying.
