Poll question: Assuming you agreed with his or her political positions, would you vote for a Mormon for President? |
|
There's a poll going around right now that shows that 1 in 5 wouldn't, so curious how DU would shake out.

1. Sure. Why not. I already vote for Christians and Jews for office, |
|
and I'm an atheist. It is the positions on issues that matter to me, not a candidates religious beliefs.

He's a Mormon. I know a lot of people don't like him here, but I think he's OK in general. More moderate than I'd like, but usually on the correct side of things.

a criterion for voting or not voting for a particular candidate. I thought we were the ones who kept religion out of politics. It shouldn't matter if a candidate is Mormon, Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, atheist, whatever. It shouldn't even be in the equation.

I care about their moral and political positions, and not their religion. Voting for a liberal Mormon is no different than voting for a liberal Catholic...a persons politics are not defined by a label on the spine of their holy book, but by the spine in their back.

I personally know several pro choice Mormons who have no problem with gay marriage.
The Catholic Church believes in the inferiority of women, staunchly opposes gay marriage and abortion, and is highly conservative in all regards. In spite of that, I have faith that our Roman Catholic Vice-President would fight against all of those positions.
Saying "All Mormons are anti-gay" is just as bigoted as saying "All Catholics are anti-gay". Religions have heads, but they're made up of individuals with varying positions on the issues.

A candidate's religion or lack thereof shouldn't have anything to do with my vote, whether Mormon, atheist or fundamentalist Zoroastrian.

at least the republicans who will be populating the primary voting booths..
Reactionary republicanism is firmly rooted in "born again-evangelical-apocalyptic- protestant religion", and they have no room for "cults" like Mormanism or even Catholicism in some circles.
they pretty much defined themselves during the Moral Majority years, and they have not changed yet.. in fact they have become bolder and meaner, and more narrow-minded than ever.
I am wondering why 27% of dems said they would not..but then it IS a Gallup poll:evilgrin:

30. Depends on the Mormon |
|
To me Vanilla Christianity is just as goofy as Mormonism, Scientology, or any other belief system where the believer's reality is more real than the collective reality
But that doesn't make them a bad person - hell, William Jennings Bryan was an extremely moral person, truly acted out of love for mankind, and thought of all men as equal when it was not politically advantageous to do so. Yet, there's that whole Scopes trial thing.
So who knows? I would decide on a case by case basis.

or whether they are college educated, male or female, a person of color, LGBT, ect. As long as he/she lines up as closely as possible with my overall political POV vrs. the other candidate(s)
No one candidate will vote exactly as I wish of course. That would obviously be nearly statistically impossible. But as long as someone is overall what I want to see in a candidate, and demonstrates an ability to get things done, they've got my vote.
I have a few key issues that I would never compromise on, but the above mentioned are not among them.

But I would vote for anyone who I thought was going to help instead of hurt people. If their was a Mormon candidate who was for seperation of church and state, who supported gay rights, women's rights, civil rights, and supported sound economic policies, then I would vote for him or her. But has there ever been any Mormon politicians who have supported these things who have not been excommunicated?
