Gogebic Taconite says that it won't proceed with a proposed iron ore mine in northern Wisconsin until the Legislature rewrites laws to speed the state's review process to construct mines.
A company official, J. Matthew Fifield, said Tuesday that Gogebic is poised to spend $20 million to $30 million on the next phase of the project - but only if legislation addressing the specific needs of open-pit mining of iron ore is signed into law, he said.

Sen. Robert Jauch (D-Poplar) said he supports new mining legislation, but he criticized Gogebic for believing it could push through controversial, complicated legislation in a matter of months.
"All of this has been negotiated in the dark," Jauch said.

Another feature would forbid the creation of a local impact committee in a community near the mine to review, comment or negotiate with the mining company. Other language would eliminate a legal appeal process known as a contested-case hearing, in which citizens could challenge the DNR's decision, and instead send a challenge directly to the courts.
