Wisconsin: Walker ends collection of racial profiling tracking data

<swnip>

June 22, 2011 4:12 p.m. | Madison - Police officers will no longer have to collect traffic-stop data to track possible racial profiling, under a bill signed into law by Gov. Scott Walker Wednesday.

The bill, which passed the Senate in February and the Assembly June 8, will reverse a state mandate requiring Wisconsin's 600 law enforcement agencies to collect racial and other data on drivers pulled over by officers.

Opponents of the mandate say the repeal will eliminate unnecessary paperwork for law enforcement and cut costs, while supporters of the mandate say the data-collection system helps keep track of potential racial profiling.

"During tight budget times we need to set priorities in all areas of government, and this bill allows law enforcement agencies to focus on doing their job - protecting and serving the public," Walker said in a statement.(

1. And fighting racism is definitely NOT a Repuke priority.
After all, the intent is to keep minority group members from voting, anyway.

3. Stay tuned for news on how the ACLU of Wisconsin will collect stories
from people who feel they were victims of racial profiling. If the police won't collect data on traffic stops, people can tell their story to them.

(that was copied directly from ACLU Wisconsin)

10. i think lahood would love to stick it to walker but...
it would not be legal to withhold funds. federal lawsuit over profiling ..yup.

a friend is a part blackfoot indian and afro-american. he had really no problems in madison but as soon as he traveled outside the of madison he ran into rampant racism. worse he was married to a white woman that doubled the problems.

in north eastern chicagoland suburbs racial profiling is really bad.with mexican americans as the targets.compounding the problem is the officers did`t mark the ethnic box which is required by law.where they got tripped up is by under reporting actually exposed the problems.

i can see why scottie wanted to stop the reporting...good way to raise revenue without anyone,like the feds, noticing what is going on.

11. "tight budget times"? Their 2 fake primaries will cost taxpayers
probably $1,000,000. Their self-serving pre-recall redistricting cost, so far, $300,000 just to draw up maps. What is our bill for the scores of state troopers who stood around the Capitol last week?
