Senate GOP leader won't say where he stands on Libya mission

By DAVID LIGHTMAN AND HALIMAH ABDULLAH
McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON -- Republicans are divided over how to proceed on endorsing - or trying to curb - the U.S. mission in Libya, and on Wednesday Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell illustrated his party's political dilemma.

Pressed repeatedly by reporters at a Washington breakfast sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor, the Kentucky Republican refused to state a position.

"I've got a variety of different views in my conference," McConnell said, referring to the Senate's 47 Republicans.

Asked for his own view, or even a gut feeling, he wouldn't even hint at his position.

1. The reporters forgot that republicans have no original ideas
He must not have talked to his Master yet

2. He's for it, but remember he wants to make the president a one termer.
So he doesn't want to say yet. Not until the talking points have been sent out.

3. McConnell has the Groucho Marx position: Whatever it is, I'm against it
"No matter how you changed it or condensed it, I'm against it."

McConnell will gladly sit on the sidelines, quiet as a turtle, waiting for developments. Then he will come out to denounce whatever happens, explain in great detail where things went wrong, and yammer on and on about how he would have done things differently. At that point, nobody will remember his prior silence, and he sure as hell won't bring it up. Mitch is the kind of guy who waits patiently for the hostilities to cease, then he goes down to the battlefield and shoots the wounded.
