Perry to announce running for president.
A Republican campaign veteran tells the Wall Street Journal that Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) has decided to run for president, "though the official word from Team Perry is still a definite maybe."

"Our normally reliable Republican source reports that Mr. Perry has surveyed the field and decided to get in the race later this summer, perhaps around the time of the national prayer meeting that Mr. Perry is hosting on August 6 at a Houston football stadium. Our source also reports that Mr. Perry is aiming to compete in the Iowa Straw Poll, even though it occurs just a week later, on August 13. The thinking is that apparent front-runner Mitt Romney 'does not reflect the Republican Party' and is therefore vulnerable to a credible challenge from the right, especially after Mr. Romney's recent squishy remarks on global warming."

15. Nothing wrong with a Texas "twang"
It's who the "twang" comes out of. And Bush did not really have a Texas "twang," but an attempt to sound "Texan." Perry's "twang" is more genuine.

6. PERRY COMMITTED TREASON, HE IS A TRAITOR!
Perry was in a position of authority, he advocated secession from the union before a crowd of people. He believes in states rights. He is a confederate throw back and needs to be stopped. He cannot head up a UNION or swear loyalty to a constitution he does not believe in. I guess this is his last term and he needs to cement himself and his future wealth on the extremes of his party.

22. Treason is specifically defined in the Constitution.
Perry hasn't waged war on the United States.

He's not guilty of sedition either.

The First Amendment protects radical and reactionary speech, unless it poses a "clear and present danger."

Perry is a slimy shitheel weasel, and there are numerous things that you and I can call him, but let's not take a legal term and use it incorrectly for the sake of hyperbolic polemic.

14. He's going to run, folks. The question is, how stupid are American voters really?
Time will tell.

So far the Republicans are setting the stage for another 2000 style election cycle. They're seeding discontent among the Democratic Party and watering it well. Meanwhile they're whipping their hate base into a frenzy with their talk of God, Abortion and how "The Gay's" are out to destroy your families. I really grow weary of the perpetual reruns.

Their hate base will slaver for either Bachman or Perry without blinking an eye. The rest of the Republicans will be a tougher sale in regards to those two in the primary election, but will turn out to vote for whoever wins in the general. All we can hope for is it's not one of those two idiots.

16. Absolutely. He's been setting this up
He has really been appealing to the hard right, Tea Bagger base. It actually has been pretty damn brilliant. He is an ignorant jackass, but the man can run a campaign. Be very afraid.

17. I agree. He's been pandering to all the extreme right for some time now.
I would be surprised if he won the nomination, but I am expecting to see him as a VP pick. He brings in the extremest of the GOP while the lead pick (Romney?) will rally the remainder. They'll be able to offset any loss to a possible Teabagger style third party candidate that way as well. They'll also get a lot of radicals to come out and vote who would normally stay at home.

As I've said before they've not groomed Perry to run for President like they did Baby Bush, his appeal in a general election would not be as broad as JR's was, but he's a damn good VP choice for them this election cycle. He has a similar appeal that Palin had originally, except he can ace an interview, work a crowd on the fly and is a GOP team player.

The plan as a whole is brilliant, and it just might work for them in 2012.

23. I agree - I think Obama's camp should be worried.
He's very conservative, caters to the very wealthy, and campaigns like no one's business.

His ego might just fit in Sarah's tour bus, but I don't see him wanting VP. He's got his little fiefdom down here - I see him either getting the nomination or running again in 2016.

28. Well if you're here in the Houston area I'm not that surprised -
Perry is popular, but Bill had his own following here in Houston. Very popular mayor ...

Also, some of the religious folk see Perry as disingenuous with his sudden devotion to religion.

19. Yawn...
Okay, so exactly how many Republicans are now running for president? Fifty? Basically, every Republican governor in America except maybe JR Simplot's son-in-law is now running for president. (And he might, except no one's going to vote for Clement Leroy Otter.)

But then again, that might turn out to be a failure of my imagination...(here's hoping...)

27. Bad News: Perry is Capable of Defeating Obama
He's just the kind of stupid America loves to vote for. He'll have the talibaptists eating out of his hand and the fiscal conservatives drolling with cutting taxes for the rich and "slashing government spending." He is, unfortunatly, a person who provides a good link between the social conservatives and fiscal conservatives.
