Watched a great play tonight called Dog Sees God |
|
It is a parody of Peanuts where the kids are in high school. Without spoiling the play it made me think of grouping up gay and how it could be rough. As a musically inclined, bookish, mess of teenager back in 1980 who was figuring out I was different from the norm in a way that took awhile to be able to name, it never occurred to me that tonight might occur. New York, even some GOPers in New York, said to people like me, you are real adults. With real adult rights, real adult responsibilities.
Growing up I wondered would I get married? I have friends who married women because that was what we did. Now they are divorced and living with men. Tonight we can get married in our most important city and third largest state. A mere 40 miles from where I grew up it is now legal for me to get married, to another man. Of course, I have to find the man first, but details, details. As a kid, frankly, never thought that would happen. The tunnel I grew up in seemed so long and so dark that the light seemed never to come.
I have no idea if I will live to see, much less use, marriage rights nationally. But I do think my students will live to see it. I am glad I lived to see New York legalize marriage equality. It really could have gone the other way. Tonight I will have a non alcoholic drink in honor of my uncle who didn't live to see tonight and my students who will live to see what I may not.
We are all New Yorkers tonight. One day I might even be an American. Someone should have told me that when I was a kid.

this particular playhouse always uses a very intimate staging which leads to feeling very involved.

6. I saw it with intimate staging, too (it was a staged reading, but the cast was pretty much off book) |

the arrogance to be a proper New Yorker, but if the position in New Jersey is still open, by all means i will apply.

The title actually comes from the line "... They say a dog sees God in his master. A cat just looks in the mirror."
