My son and I went to visit my sister yesterday. She has been battling cancer, and I take care of her paperwork for her – medical bills, insurance, and all the bullshit that goes with being sick in America today. My son goes to lend moral support; as a youngster, he viewed his aunt as a rather stern figure, but now recognizes and appreciates her quirky, often dark, sense of humor.
While there, her phone rang. After a brief moment, she handed it to me, saying, “I don't have time for this idiot.” So I entered the telephone conversation.
A fellow speaking in a loud, pressured voice was yelping about the need for Christians to “save” the sacred institution of marriage. Did I agree? I said yes, that I am convinced that marriage equality that protects every person's right to marry the person of their choice is essential – and that this means it is essential the person of their choice wants to marry them, too. No forced marriages.
There was a brief pause. I assume the fellow was catching his breath, preparing for his next long-winded delivery. “Sir, we believe that it is urgent that Christians call their state representatives and tell them that God intends for marriage to be an exclusive institution between one man and one woman...” I normally do not like to interrupt people, especially strangers, but I had to: “Well, I'm a frequent Christian, and that is simply not true.”
“Sir,” he said, in an even louder voice that had no hint of patience within it, “I am from (some group that I have already forgotten), and the bible says that....” Again, interrupting, yet hopefully with patience, I said, “Well, I am a member of the Organization of Religious Groups Against Smutty Material, ORGASM, and...”
He hung up on me. I was stunned. I thought our conversation had such potential.
My sister said something to the effect that rigid Christians are unfamiliar with the concepts of orgasms, and we all had a giggle.
I was mighty happy with the vote last night. It shows that this fellow was right to hang up on me. It's time for his ilk to just hang it up.
