A meme I want to start: "Thank the Republicans"
Edited on Sat Jun-25-11 08:56 AM by LuckyTheDog
Last night gay marriage was passed by a Republican-controlled legislative body for the first time. Now, we all know that the back story on this is complicated. But, hey, the other side does not care about nuance and details. So, why not throw those tactics back in their faces.

I'd like to start an Internet meme "thanking the Republican Party" for its historic support of gay marriage -- just to piss off the GOP base.

Here is a Facebook "status" I am using, feel free to use it as well:

"Credit where credit is due: I would like to thank Republicans for moving boldly to roughly double the number of Americans who can legally enter same-sex marriages. Good job, GOP! If you are as proud of the Republicans as I am, please paste this message into your status."

1. Exactly four republicans voted for marriage equality.
they deserve thanks but republicans in general do not. One Democratic senator joined all the other republicans and voted against marriage equality.

3. The one democrat is a holy roller from the Bronx. Hope people in his district
remember his vote at primary time.

7. That's not the point

The point is not to actually thank the Republicans. The point is to separate the Republicans from their base. The whole meme I am proposing is intentionally dishonest and sarcastic.

The aim here is the same as when President Obama thanks Mitt Romney for his leadership on health care reform. We want to give them "credit" they don't want.

2. You should not dishonor the courage that it took for four republicans to vote
with all but one democrat to get the bill passed. Those four people will face difficult election races because of their courage. They don't need gasoline thrown on the fires that they face. I don't know how those four republicans vote on other issues that are important to democrats, but if they are the rare breed of rational republican, they deserve democratic support unless they are running against a true democratic progressive in the general.

4. I just can't do this.
I think it is a wonderful thing that gays are allowed to marry in NY and I would hate to limit gays in other states being able to get married. If I did this I feel Republicans would feel the heat and they would never vote for another bill like this. I love my gay brothers and sisters too much to limit them just to drive a screw into the backs of a few Republicans. We need to encourage such acts, not drive them into hiding so they will never vote for another such bill.

5. No. Here's what's happening.
Seeing the handwriting on the wall, coastal Republicans will eventually support repeal of DOMA.

Repeal of DOMA is good, but we can't let those fuckers get the credit. In actuality it's happening over their dead bodies.

I won't thank Republicans because they are unworthy of being credited for anything.

8. You are not getting the sarcasm.

6. No thanks. The republicans in my state still oppose marriage for gays.
