2. The down-and-outers are just about invisible
in the eyes of today's society. I think they were better off during the '30's because then at least people acknowledged their existence, weren't in denial about their possibility of joining them, and didn't blame them for their own misfortune.

Just yesterday or so, I talked wo a woman who expressed her worries about her husband's job security and then went on to deride the lazy bums collecting unemployment. Wow, what a schism she is carrying around in her head!
