Cars.com "most American car": 1. Camry, 2. Accord, 3. Malibu, 4. Explorer ...
http://www.cars.com/go/advice/Story.jsp?section=top&subject=ami&story=amMade0611

What Are the Top American-Made Cars?

Cars.com's American-Made Index rates vehicles built and bought in the U.S. Factors include sales, where the car's parts come from and whether the car is assembled in the U.S. We disqualify models with a domestic parts content rating below 75 percent, models built exclusively outside the U.S. or models soon to be discontinued without a U.S.-built successor.

Toyota and Honda Still Tops; GM Moves Up

Despite stagnant sales, the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord remain atop this year's American-Made Index. Falling domestic parts content axed Ford's popular Escape and Focus, but the Dearborn, Mich., automaker's redesigned, Chicago-built Explorer hit the ground running and entered the list at fourth place.

1. Toyota Camry Georgetown, Ky.; Lafayette, Ind. 1
2. Honda Accord Marysville, Ohio; Lincoln, Ala. 2
3. Chevrolet Malibu Kansas City, Kan. 5
4. Ford Explorer Chicago —
5. Honda Odyssey Lincoln, Ala. 6
6. Toyota Sienna Princeton, Ind. 10
7. Jeep Wrangler Toledo, Ohio 9
8. Chevrolet Traverse Lansing, Mich. —
9. Toyota Tundra San Antonio 8
10. GMC Acadia Lansing, Mich. —

2. Last I checked toyota and honda build their engines/drivetrains in Japan
Personally I'd rather have a made in America/Canada engine in the auto I'm depending on to get me from here to there. My neighbor has a '06 camry and it says on the engine and tranny made in japan. Tinny little pos you couldn't run fast enough to give me one, a honda either.

Of course their critical components are made in Japan.
Thats why they LAST FOREVER.

When you're on the hiways going from here to there take note of the numbers of Toyota's that are at least 20 years old and the numbers of Fords that are 20 years old and older and keep a mental tab of the two and you'll find that you'll see many more 20, hell some 30 and 40 year old Fords that are still on the road where you won't see many Toyota's cars or pickups. Dang sure won't see many 30 and 40 year old Toyota's if you see any at all but they'll be many old Fords of that vintage. Then come back and tell me that they last as long or longer than the Fords. You'll still see quit a few GM branded vehicles that will fit this criteria but not many Chrysler brands. I very seldom see any Toyota cars or pickups that are 20 plus years old at all, in fact its a rarity to see one.

edit to fix on to one in subject line

18. I see old toyotas all the time. I own one. It replaced a detroit brand that died with half as many

miles and it still drives like new.

I have another newer toyota with about 70k miles on it. It's never needed repairs, not even once.
I bought it to replace a ford mustand that for all intents and purposes died at 70k miles as it just got too expensive to keep replacing sensors and all the parts that were designed to fail on it.

I used to drive and prefer detroit brands but you know, like millions of other people, I've discovered how nice it is to have a trouble-free car that starts up every time and the check engine light doesn't come on constantly.

19. As I was saying,
take notice of the numbers of the domestic and foreign branded old cars and pickups on the highway while you're traveling around. I can't remember when I've seen a 20 years or older toyota on the highway last. Old fords you bet they're all around me still being driven daily.
We own two 98 model fords that have well over a hundred thousand miles on them and they are still like new in all ways. The upholstery, everything except maybe paint

You just have a selective pro-Toyota mind-set.

"a trouble-free car "

LOL. Yeah, someone hasn't paid attention to the news lately.

to ignore Toyota's quality problems, huh? Toyota itself admitted its quality problems. The blind loyalty Toyota supporters have is shocking.

Still proud of the CAW sticker in the drivers door. Lots of parts made in Mexico too.

Engine made in China.

Transmission union made in Japan.

This sticker is on my 09 Cobalt built in Lordstown, Oh:

6. assembled in the usa
we no longer make a majority of the parts for any car that is assembled in the usa. i made one assembly for many cars assembled in the usa...3 of the 15 parts that made up the part were made in the usa. the rest were made in china and india.

8. Hmmmm.
the OP is all you need.

Since no car is allowed on the list with less than 75% of the parts made in the US, and since 75% is more than half, then that means most of the parts for all these cars were made here. Which given the leanness of automotive supply chains and the very stiff penalties for failure to supply, is understandable. I've lived near more than one auto plant, and the concentration of Tier 1, 2 and even 3 suppliers clustered around them is significant. I've also worked for a couple of those suppliers, and I've never worked anywhere that was merely an assembly house.

Tells me a lot about our current suck ass society.

Hope anyone driving one doesn't ever need my help in their struggle.

9. On the other hand...
Most cars made by companies with UAW shops appear not to be made primarily in the US. So which is more problematic: a company with a non-union workforce that employs lots of Americans and pays them a living wage, or a company that has a union shop but nevertheless farms out most of its labor to non-union, non-American workers? I'm not asking that rhetorically; I think it's a legitimate question raised by these rankings.

(For what it's worth: I'm a union member and I don't own a car)

10. Both of my cars have UAW union labels on them right out in the open to see
Edited on Tue Jun-28-11 08:35 AM by NNN0LHI
If one doesn't have that label I won't buy it.

Can you think of a way this could possibly be simplified more for people who seem confused by this?

Seems pretty straightforward to me.
