handpicked for discussion purposes:

yesterday's riots: http://www.buzzfeed.com/gavon/45-amazing-photos-of-the-riots-in-greece

Here's the question. Do you sympathize with the protests? Does that form common ground between right and left?

2. I have to wonder what sort of threat the kid with the drum represented
Riot cops need to pick their targets more carefully. Shots like this are what make the lumpen turn against them.

3. your average cop is a stupid, brutal gangster.
You expect too much thinking from them.

5. You've only known them as somebody who got caught, I guess
I knew them when I was a nurse and most of them were decent guys.

The few bad ones were really bad, though.

13. lol, i know! .... still, Greek police are nothing like American cops;

I can only imagine all the police abuse etc etc. that would've happened if the protests like that took place here in the US.

4. Imagine how the United States of America is going to react.
because you can bet your ass we are in for some austerity measures ourselves. Will we sit home and watch that tellyvision thing? Or will we be like the Greeks?

7. Totally sympathize (110 on the scale of 100). As for the second question,

not sure where you're going with that. Obviously, the protests are left-wing = pro-working class, and are directed specifically against right-wing policies forced upon the Greek people.

Thanks for the link to the pictures.

Glad to see he's still around! (though to me he looks suspiciously a little different than the Louk of a year or 2 ago).

18. Sympathize? If we're lucky we'll fight back as they are when it hits here.
And it will hit here, not in the identical way, but these crises are escalating and the only way for capital is to survive is through austerity--so you better believe it's going to get austere for us because it won't for them.

As to the "unified right/left question" the answer is no. What will and must be unified is the working class (broadly construed, not in the silly US "income-based" sense). As of last year the only "right-left" convergence is between the old Stalinist communist parties who are actually so far to the right that the Fascist parties supported them, and the lively authentic left parties like SYRIZA who actually have hardcore leftists in them.

This article from last summer gives a very in depth explanation of the Greek left from a Greek socialist organizer.
