First article linking Giffords shooting to Palin's 'target map' and gun sights
Miss Giffords had been named as a political campaign target for conservatives in November’s elections by former Alaska governor Sarah Palin for her strong support for the health reforms of President Barack Obama.

Mrs Palin had published a “target map” on her website using images of gun sights to identify 20 House Democrats, including Miss Giffords, for backing the new health care law.

No way. They have been so indoctrinated that they will feel the shootings were entirely justified. I mean after all the victim voted for Obama care. :eyes:

33. Probably a similar situation in Germany in 1933.
Can't fix the problem until it is named. Fascism. It is also the reason the republicans have been in power since 2000.We are not a free country when there is no freedom of the press, no privacy, fixed elections, illegal wars without citizen's approval or consent, a justice system that lets the rich and republicans get away with murder and the poor sentenced for years for nothing. Then they get to work for a dollar a day .Then you get groped if you want to travel by air. Arrested if you don't allow the groping. Why do we hate to use the correct word for the problem? Fear?

37. Noam Chomsky has said, on several occasions that these times are similar to Germany in '33
And, though he was here, in the US, he observed them.
He has stated, time and again, that we are on the same path, today, that Germany was in in 1933.

40. I have been saying for a long time on DU that we are in a period
very similar to the time that lead to Hitler's ascension to power in Germany. This assassination and attempted assassination -- this act of terror -- brings us much, much closer.

Obama must treat this as a serious terrorist attack -- just as he did the shooting in Texas of the army psychiatrist. He must move very quickly to determine who did this, whether the person was or persons were part of a group, what motivated them to do this, what influences pushed him or them to act. And then all of that has to be made known and condemned. If those things don't happen, acts of terrorism will increase.

Hopefully, if Obama and the government really take charge, there will not be a reaction on the left that then justifies even more extreme right-wing acts.

I hope that Obama has an expert on Germany and Austria in the 1920s and 1930s among his advisers.

It is a pattern that could easily be repeated.

Here on DU, it is very important that we continue to dedicate ourselves to nonviolence on all sides.

48. This IS domestic terrorism. Perpetrated quite lopsidedly by the CON side.
You don't see our side running out and grabbing guns and ammo and making threats against public officials with whom we disagree. NOBODY I saw here or elsewhere EVER did that against the bushies, and we hated them with a passion. Our side simply does not do that stuff. It has to be pointed out again and again until it starts sinking in. I'm glad this is going viral. I'm glad other media are picking up on it. I'm glad the dots are being connected. It needs to be labeled "DOMESTIC TERRORISM" and people like palin need to be labeled "Domestic TERRORISTS" or "Terrorist SYMPATHIZERS." It needs to be plastered across the front of them like a scarlet letter.

36. Palin's map is reprehensible, but I don't think the killing has anything to do
with it.

I had a chance to look at the kid's youtube page before it was taken down and I'm fairly sure he's schizophrenic. Fixed bizarre delusions, and reports from his former classmates about his behavior support this conclusion. I suspect Giffords was chosen due to easy availability. He might have shot any politician.

The point is not that specific map led to this specific crime. The point is that maps like those, and all the eliminationist rhetoric coming from Palin and pals are sending people over the edge.

A 22-year-old woman in Arizona, Caitie Parker, claimed on her Twitter feed that she went to high school and college with the gunman, and was in a band with him. She described his politics in the past as "left wing, quite liberal, & oddly obsessed with the 2012 prophecy." She also described him as having a lot of friends "until he got alcohol poisoning in '06" and dropped out of school. "Mainly loner very philosophical."
Parker described the gunman meeting Rep. Gabrielle Giffords previously: "He was a political radical & met Giffords once before in '07, asked her a question & he told me she was 'stupid & unintelligent.'"

58. Take it for what you will but....
anyone who doesn't also equally denounce the daily kos for using the terms "target list" and "bulls eye" on a list that included Giffords is a complete hypocrite.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/6/25/1204/74882/511/541568
And while blaming Palin, why no mention about the daily kos post on Jan 6th about Giffords that exclaimed “My CongressWOMAN voted against Nancy Pelosi! And is now DEAD to me!”.

Those on the far left and far right are quick to point the finger of blame. They should all take a look in the mirror and blame themselves.
