"President Obama won't be eating lunch with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Republicans on Thursday, White House press secretary Jay Carney says.

McConnell invited Obama on Thursday to lunch at the Capitol to talk about the deficit, a day after Obama lectured Congress on not working hard enough.

“What the senator invited the president to do was to hear Senate Republicans restate their maximalist position,” and talk about what wouldn't pass in a deficit deal, Carney said. He added, “That’s not a conversation worth having.”

Obama, Carney said, has no interest in talking about “what would not pass.”

“What we need to have a conversation on is what will pass,” the press secretary said."
