Pelosi Blindsided By Obama (TPM)
Pelosi Blindsided By Obama
David Kurtz | July 7, 2011, 1:17PM

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told her agitated caucus this morning that she was left in the dark about the plan to reportedly include Social Security cuts in a debt deal.

"President Barack Obama has yet to respond to a request from Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) for a Wednesday meeting with Senate Democrats, days after rejecting an invitation from Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to meet with his Conference.

Reid said last week he was "confident" that the meeting between his Democratic Conference and Obama would happen Wednesday either on the Hill or at the White House, but so far, the administration has not confirmed there will even be a meeting, according to multiple sources."

44. Unfortunately...
Obama caters to the corporations, to Wall Street and to the neocons--who appear
to be dismantling this country and our democracy.

There's a big party going on in this country. Only the top 1 percent are invited.

I guess Obama decided that he wants to be on the inside clinking cocktail glasses
with corrupt politicians, the Koch Brothers and other assorted assclown criminals.

Lovely. Just lovely.

24. Pres. Obama in his SOTU said he'd cut costs and fraud but not benefits. Nothing has changed.
Edited on Thu Jul-07-11 01:40 PM by ClarkUSA
Did Pelosi and other Democrats listen to the SOTU at all? Or would everyone rather panic at the WaPo Business section shit-stirring spin?

Furthermore, the WH has already pushed back on the original shit-stirring WaPo Business section spin and issued this statement:

"There is no news here," Carney said. "The President has always said that while social security is not a major driver of the deficit, we do need to strengthen the program and the President said in the State of the Union Address that he wanted to work with both parties to do so in a balanced way that preserves the promise of the program and doesn't slash benefits."

The actual story is that the President will not slash SS benefits. Where are the appropriate headlines to this effect?
Let's not take the bait. Wait for actual information, before assuming the worst, please.

26. I'm not convinced
that Obama wants to be re-elected. Either way he is set for life and he has certainly done enough damage during his first term to expect that he just might not be welcomed back by many who championed his election.

29. So what are Pelosi and Hoyer against? Here's the message they are delivering to the White House.

They want to see revenues included in the package and are opposed to cutting Social Security "as a means of balancing the budget".

Oh, that's really going out on the limb.

So exactly what kinds of changes to Medicare are they opposed to? And are Pelosi and Hoyer clearly against any Social Security changes that will cut benefits to future retirees such as a new method to calculate Social Security cost-of-living increases and increasing the early and full retirement age?

We shall see. BBI

Fromm the same article:

According to one top aide, both Pelosi and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) intended to "deliver a message from the caucus that we definitely want to see revenues included in any package."

Additionally, "any changes to Medicare have to be things that strengthens the program, not just a bank for tax cuts for millionaires," and the party is broadly opposed to cutting Social Security as a means of balancing the budget.

40. Obama, lawmakers still far apart on debt
"Reuters) - President Barack Obama and top lawmakers emerged from talks on Thursday still far apart on breaking a budget deadlock and said negotiators will work through the weekend for a deal to avoid a debt default.

Obama and top lawmakers are aiming for a broad deficit reduction agreement in negotiations that could involve changes to popular entitlement programs such as Social Security.

Thursday's meeting at the White House followed weeks of impasse filled with acrimony and political finger-pointing."
