Man loses his job after Chase bank has him arrested for cashing their own check
By David Neiwert

Lynda Bryon at KING-5 News in Seattle has the story, ably summed up at The Consumerist:

Ikenna , a 28-year old construction worker, went to deposit a $8,463.21 Chase cashier's check at his local Chase branch, only for the teller to decide that neither he nor his check looked right and he got tossed in jail for forgery, KING5 reports. The next day, a Friday, the bank realized its mistake and left a message with the detective. But it was her day off, so he spent the entire weekend in jail.

By the time he got out, he had been fired from his job for not showing up to work. His car had been towed as well. It ended up getting sold off at auction because he couldn't afford to get it out of the pound. He had been relying on that cashier's check for his money but it was taken as evidence and by the time he got it back it was auctioned off.

All this while the cashier's check had been issued by the very bank he was trying to cash it at.

Chase didn't even apologize, not even after a year. A lawyer volunteered to help write a strongly-worded letter requesting damages. After trying hard to get a response, they sent KING 5 a two-sentence reply: "We received the letter and are reviewing the situation. We'll be reaching out to the customer."

2. Hopefully he will score big time
When the Lawyers take his case, and sue the bank and his Employment. The lawyers will probably get most of it, but at least he will have had his day in court.

It looks as if he was fortunate enough to find a lawyer willing to volunteer their time. Between that, and the attention this has gotten, he will hopefully finally see something done.

I have a dear friend who's having trouble with her bank right now. She misplaced her checkbook and went to the bank to get some temporary checks, but the person who issues temporary checks had the day off. To make matters worse, the ATM was out of order. She had no way to pay her rent (fortunately, I had enough in my account at another bank to write a check to her landlord).

By the way, the bank was Chase.

5. Took a pretty large check to a bank to pay my house off once and thought I was going to jail
They had to have every bank official in the bank sign off on the payment and they wouldn't give me a receipt until everyone had signed off. Felt like they thought I was robbing the place.

11. I took a check to Chase to pay off a credit card debit
The check was from the mortgage company, so I could pay off the debt. I handed the check to the cashier, went into her hand, she gave me a receipt, and I closed my account and walked out. A month later, I got a statement from the Chase credit card missing the $3800 that I had paid off, the next month the same thing, meanwhile they are adding late fees and over limit fees. They LOST the check!!!!!

I called the mortgage company and told them to re-issue the check, but in my name because I had to deal with Chase and get all the fees taken off before I would pay it. I received the check, put it in my bank account, and continued to call and try to deal with Chase. Finally, I received a statement that I could pay off the entire amount for 50% of what was owed. I took them up on it. If they had dealt with the situation 6 months earlier, they would have had all the money.

12. Why wouldn't the detective go to the bank where the check originated
to check out his story before arresting him?

13. Very good question
It seems that "Justice" runs fast on the word of one of the gov't's pet banks, doesn't it?

14. The call to the detective came from the bank

where the check originated. I'm guessing that the detective thought the
bank had done it's due diligence.
