Henry Ford paid his workers the then-unheard of $5 a day to build cars. That way they could buy the stuff they made.

It turned out taht they also could set aside some to buy a house, send their kids to college and do other stuff that the middle class came to take for granted.

Thanks to globalization, who needs to do any of that stuff? We -- as in Wall Street -- have China to make stuff and sell to and borrow from.
