95. Thank You For This Thread
I was getting to leave the site after reading one too many negative comments about the president in other threads when I came across yours. I feel better after reading most of the comments in your thread. The most disgusting thread I came across today on DU was one calling for Howard Dean to primary the president in 2012. How ridiculous. The poster had failed to see Dr. Dean's comments today where he said he agreed with Obama's approach and thought he was doing a good job. When someone pointed this out on the thread others piled on and tagged Dr. Dean as having "changed" intimating I guessed that he is also a corporate shill. Some days I have to remind myself that I'm on a site of Democrats. Thanks again for the positive post.

on DU want to pretend that isn't true and he can do whatever whenever however whyever he wants to, no Congress, no Republicans, no Media, no History, nothing but he himself figures in anything that happens. Though I agree with some of these "Democrats" on the issues, I profoundly reject what they are doing right now and I'm considering a litmus test on future activist relationships.

22. Criticism of Obama's policies does not mean you don't support him
Sometimes I get the feeling that any kind of criticism of Obama's policies is unacceptable. I do feel that many of his policies should be criticized:

- Extending the Patriot Act
- Continuing indefinite detention
- Engaging in 3 simultaneous wars
- Extending the Bush tax cuts

I could go on, but I think you get the point.

These policies should be criticized, however, criticism does not mean you don't support Obama.

90. There is a difference between "criticism", "bashing" and outright lies.
For instance, let's look at your list:

- extending the PATRIOT ACT; it's not the same PATRIOT ACT. It was greatly reformed, thanks in large part to Obama's efforts as a Senator. It's still not "perfect", as Obama himself stated as a Senator, but it was reformed greatly.

- continuing indefinite detention; in case you haven't noticed, most of the detainees have been to trial and/or released. Obama's biggest deterrent in this matter - NIMBY's in Congress.

- Engaging in 3 simultaneous wars; he inherited 2 that he is working to end. We are pulling out of Iraq and Afghanistan. Our engagement in Libya cannot be considered "fighting a war". It is a revolution that was begun by Libyan civilians. Our engagement is limited to supplying support for NATO forces that are supplying humanitarian efforts - NOT fighting the war.

- Extending the Bush tax cuts; Here we go again! He supported extending the cuts for the middle class but not for the wealthy. He only agreed to extending the cuts to the wealthy in order to continue the cuts for the middle-class and also scored some very important Progressive advances in the process. It turned out to be a very favorable deal for Progressives.

Things look very different when you do a little digging and question the spin. And much of the anti-Obama spin from the Left is just as outrageous as much of the spin from the Right.

I agree that no one is so bullett-proof that they can be criticized, even Obama. But much of the "criticism" aimed at Obama here is completely unwarranted and spun out of any and all reality.

23. Since no DUer may command any other DUer as to which thread they may open or not,
I'm clicking.

The Presidency is a job which Obama willingly and eagerly sought and I'm pretty sure he already knew it was going to be a tough job. No President gets a pass just because the job is tough.

Republicans like to spout "my country, right or wrong" so I equally reject "my President, right or wrong". However, it is possible to support the President without agreeing with his choices and to call him on it if one believes he has broken promises or breaks with traditional Democratic values.

From: thread of support for Obama (don't even click here if you don't support him)

To: thread of support for Obama (I respectfully request that those who don't support him ignore this OP)

The former seems to invite flaming. The latter politely asks those who would flame you to resist doing so.

Not that I think it will make much difference.

26. Yes.
People who are out to destroy him should ask themselves honestly if their conception of what is happening might just be somewhat limited in selected ways and whether their agenda, however noble, might just really be to put something other than functional solutions first in their priorities. And before you all kick my ass for saying that, know that I ask myself those same questions every time I do anything.

I have to admit that even as an avid supporter of the President, I am a bit nervous about what is in the proposal. But at the end of the day, I am a democrat. I believe that a democratic President can lead the nation more effectively than a republican one.

But this pro-Obama thread was started at 5.04 PM. As of 5.49 it has 2 recs.

Now THIS thread was started at 5.09 PM. As of 5.49 it has 17 recs.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x1445476

The second thread is a snippet of a work called 'Toward Soviet America,' written in the early 1930s by American Communist William Z. Foster. Its opening lines are: 'The most striking and significant political and social fact in the world today is the glaring contrast between the industrial, political and social conditions prevailing in the capitalist countries and those obtaining in the Soviet Union.'

Foster continues: 'Throughout the capitalist world, without exception, the picture is one of increasing chaos and crisis . . . on the other hand, the Soviet Union, born in the midst of the capitalist world slaughter of 1914-18, presents a picture of growth and general social advance . . . They are building a new and free proletarian democracy.'

But my favorite line (one that the OP includes in her post) comes a bit further down: 'Wholesale starvation, spreading like a plague, is the order of the day in all capitalist countries'

FYI, Foster was writing AT THE HEIGHT OF THE MOTHERFUCKING TERROR FAMINE IN THE SOVIET UNION!!!!!

So let's recap. On DU now, a thread supporting the Democratic president struggles to gain a positive balance of support, while a post of a pro-Stalin work from the early 1930s does not.

Are you reading this, Skinner?

The job is outstandilngly hard, the country is still traumatized and he's facing a sea of opportunists who want to capitalize on that traumatization.

It might be true that most of the supporters have been discouraged by the rageful and have gone off. It's hard to talk to rageful people.

I wish he would have done a better job on some things, but I know the opposition he's dealing with is huge and fierce. And the gullibility / stupidity / selfishness (pick any combination) of the American public is stunning and demoralizing and I don't know how any liberal elected official can deal with it mentally every day. I would've shot someone or myself, I think. Which is why I won't be running for any significant office.

50. Yup.
Tough job made more so by hate-mongering from the right, deliberate legislative obstruction in effort to make him look ineffective, and media manipulations that consistently slander the man and distort his initiatives. No other president in my lifetime (and I go back to Truman) has been subjected to such a degree of unmitigated bullshit while being held to a bizarrely higher standard than has ever been applied to presidents. Do we need to mention the bellydrop when so many abandoned the "yes we can" and substituted finger-pointing "yes HE should and why the hell hasn't he"?

Damn it all, Shrub had eight years to trash the country. EIGHT YEARS. Obama sought the chance to try to fix the mess; he got thrown into a hole where he slogs away shoulder deep in GOP-generated sewage, and we stand around yelling at him for not doing it just exactly the way we just know it would be done if we were doing it. Some days it's US who suck.

President Obama has my support. Thanks for asking.

But just between you and I, if I were you, I wouldn't be suggesting that people not post in topics where their opinion isn't popular or welcome.

Know what I mean?

144. ummm...why don't we take a look at your post ( number 58 ) and take it from there
and perhaps, from now on you may pay some attention to what you actually TYPE....dude

In other words:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=439&topic_id=1445398&mesg_id=1447343

but something tells me you'll need some help in figuring that out ( always here and happy to oblige )

Let's try this...I have a party, and I invite several friends over ( and friends of friends..strangers, if you will ) and one of them gets out of control and starts sexually harassing some of my female guests...I say to you "Maybe it's a good idea if you leave now, since you appear to be out of control". You strike me as the type of guy who would take that as "Well, he didn't say get the fuck out or I'll kill you, so I guess I'll stick around"

Now...your response to Marr was pretty much the same thing..if you bothered to even READ the frigging thing ( maybe you didn't and your fingers got out of control and you thought you were actually being SMART ) but you pretty much said to him/her that their opinion is NOT WELCOME.

You can try to dance around your own words...you can try to make it seem like that is not what you meant...

Well, I have to give you SOME credit for trying.

Truth be told, I bet Michelle has been dropping hints for a while about how she'd love a nice, quiet life back in (insert city of choice).

After reading about yet another death threat against this man and the unceasing relentless idiocy (and racism) from both sides of the political spectrum, she probably wants to take her husband and her babies and get the f*ck away from DC as fast as she can.

No, I was a huge Obama supporter that worked hard for his campaign (lots of time and money) in the pivotal Wisconsin primary, that has felt that he has abandoned his principles. Or he is a complete hypocrite...
Which is worse?

Thanks for the laugh, though. Quayle...

He is no son of JFK.

Maybe Obama is a relative of the Quayles? I wonder if Murphy Brown would have supported his compromises with the traitorous Republicans?

91. I support President Obama
And will be just as enthusiastic in my support for him in '12 as I was in '08. He inherited the worst economy since the Great Depression, saved us from another that may have actually been worse in scope than the aforementioned, and beginning this past January has been forced to contend with the most venomous, hostile Congress I can ever recollect. They're open in their intention to do anything possible (including tanking the economy) to defeat him this upcoming election cycle. They makes the '94 Reptilicans look like Wal-Mart greeters in comparison.

156. As they say, since he is paid by tax money, then yes. Folks who don't like
Edited on Sat Jul-09-11 06:27 PM by Obamanaut
McCain say he's been suckling at the government teat all his life. Where, exactly, is the difference? They are both government employees, paid by taxes.

The private school cost would pay someone's mortgage for a year, or more. Where is the cry for wealth redistribution? The answer is, it is selective. If a rich guy is liked, it's ok. If not, it isn't.

145. He hasn't had it nearly as tough as the unemployed in this country. Especially the 99ers.
Remember them?

I don't think Obama does either.

I do and this bit of whatever doesn't change the whole lot of nothing that has been done for them.

But I can't believe the things he's done on certain issues. The issue for me is medical Marijuana. That is something HE could do all by himself, but we still see busts being made. I mean the man smoked pot when he was young. He believes in science, so why does he play games with medical MJ?

If you really think that covering your eyes is the way to deal with difference of opinion, maybe you should just admit that you ARE republicans in principle.

194. How nice it must be
to be so easily pleased.

Three fucking wars , an economy in the shitter , and the gap between richest rich, and the poor , wider than ever before......Wider than in 1929. Think about that.

I envy your loyalty.

But cannot emulate it, because I tend to live in the real world, and not some pro-DLC fantasy place.

It must be awfully nice, but I know too much to believe in your happy story.

Bitterness?
Are you even paying attention?
