Toronto Star: Public health officials fear gonorrhea turning into superbug

Ontario public health officials fear gonorrhea could turn into a superbug because research suggests it is becoming resistant to antibiotics.

“The issue is there are not a lot of drugs to turn to after this,” said Dr. Vanessa Allen of Public Health Ontario.

“It’s very much a problem everywhere,” added Allen, a microbiologist who tracks sexually transmitted infections.

A report issued Friday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control warned that laboratory cultures of Neisseria gonorrhea are becoming more resistant to the antibiotic of choice today, cephalosporin. More and more of the antibiotic is needed to kill off the organism. That suggests that more of the drug is also needed to get rid of gonorrhea in humans. ............(more)

1. This has been a long time in the making
Back in the seventies, it was known that commercial sex workers in Cebu City (Philippines) were taking prophylactic doses of antibiotics, which laid the groundwork for development of a 'superbug.'

4. Folks load up on supplies of antiobiotics from Tijuana (no prescription required) and
take them at the hint of the sniffles, not realizing the long term consequences.
