a shack with a dirt floor. For anyone to consider a slave family a "household" just shows how really awful these people are.

10. Exactly! Anyone as preoccupied about sex this and sex that all the
time has to be hiding something. It's nothing short of weird. They are fixated on other peoples sex lives and telling them exactly what to do. It's really really weird IMO.

4. They also don't know what a slave was
Ahtough back in my time we didn't take Black History, we did have AMERICAN history. What is a slave? A slave was a person who could be sold anytime, and anywhere; husbands, wives, and even their children to the highest bidder. Female slaves were there for the pleasure of their owners. Did the children they bore of rape count in the mix of "stable families"? The female slave raising her "bastard" children while the owner lived in his big house constitute a traditional family? I sure as hell don't think so.

8. I don't think it would change her at all
I'm sure the idiot would find something in it to try and justify slavery. It seems she is living in an alternate universe.

7. As bad as
wanting old people to work until they keel over, and for homosexuals to "join the mainstream".

Feel free to read her proposal, that's exactly what she wants. Along with women to have as many children as they can.

Does that not sound like the American people turned into cattle?

9. Actually.....
I don't mean to sound pedantic, but the shacks were raised up off the ground and had plank, not dirt floors. People settling the South learned early on that wood in direct contact with ground was a quick meal for termites. In the photo in the link below, you will see brick piers that lift the shack a foot or so off the ground.

I agree it is important to counter right-wing whitewashes of history, and there is no better way than to take a look at the history that is preserved in the South. No matter how many trendy stalls and upscale restaurants populate the historic antique marketplace in Charleston, SC, it is still the slave market.

13. Was it brick?
I've seen brick built directly on the ground, with dirt floors, but I can't ever recall seeing wood structures sitting on the ground. Maybe because they were already eaten.

17. Thank you, Tara. It takes a while for them to kick in on
some days. Hunter Thompson once wrote that vegas is a bad place to do drugs because reality is already so distorted. I agree but much of the reality distortion in vegas is visual. I contend that the US, in general, is now a wonderful place to do drugs because intellectual, moral, and artistic realities are SO distorted that you have to have drugs of some sort to deal with the distortion and remember the sane perspective. I admit that I've had a costly lapse or two during the past 8 to 10 years. Again, thanks!

18. I wish you only the best.
We have been battered around for so long, we forget that we aren't here just to survive, but to thrive and grow.

I began taking meds in 2001 and I have made many changes, have thought that I could "do it on my own" and know that it is easier for me to focus on what needs me this way than without.

BTW, DU has saved my sanity, the drugs just make it possible for me to focus!

19. Same here. Just focus and make it through the day. I have had a
long, hard journey and I fully realize that many would laugh at that statement because I'm better off than most. I'm not rich but I have a good job (29 years with the same "agency") that has taken me all over the planet (for good or ill) and a couple of well meaning folks in my life. Although, I MUST keep in mind that people (um, women) are NOT a panacea or salvation (or should that read "salivation"?) }( Anyway, thanks.... You seem to be "real folk".
