Violent imagery must go

“Lock n’ Load’’ Sarah Palin’s penchant for bull’s-eyes and gun imagery could not seem more grotesque this morning. So is the motto used by Jesse Kelly, the Tea Party favorite Palin endorsed to run against Gabrielle Giffords last fall.

“Get on Target for Victory in November. Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office,’’ said Kelly’s campaign. “Shoot a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly.” Now someone actually has shot a gun at Gabrielle Giffords, also a prime target on Palin’s “hit list” of 20 politicians singled out last year for favoring health-care reform.

And Giffords had been the object of violence before: Her campaign headquarters was vandalized and she received death threats last March right after her health-care vote. At the time, Giffords said leaders should tone down the debate.

Nightmares such as yesterday’s shooting remind regular Joe and Jane Americans that ours is a violent nation; that powerful politicians’ normalizing and embracing violent imagery can indeed incite real nuts, who are in no short supply.

On mornings such as this, Palin’s chirpy calls to “lock n’ load” sound sickening. And the more you learn about yesterday’s carnage, the more sickening they sound.
