Poll question: Did you vote for the guy? Or the policies?
In the 2008 Presidential primaries and general election, did you vote for the guy (or gal) or for the policies that person represented?

"I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever, in religion, in philosophy, in politics, or in anything else, where I was capable of thinking for myself. Such an addiction is the last degradation of a free and moral agent. If I could not go to heaven but with a party, I would not go there at all." Thomas Jefferson to Francis Hopkinson, 1789.

"Were parties here divided merely by a greediness for office,...to take a part with either would be unworthy of a reasonable or moral man." Thomas Jefferson to William Branch Giles, 1795.

“Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost." John Quincy Adams

10. Thanks For The Distinction... I Voted Because I Was A Democrat Who
always votes. Obama was NEVER my 1st, 2nd or even 3rd choice, but he WAS the Nominee! And the alternative was horrendous.

There really was NO choice, and right now there seems to be NO CHOICE again! I'm sick at heart and SICK to death that I now think of him as Mr. Compromise!

I DON'T like what is happening and it's almost too much to bear. I feel alone and deserted by a Party that once stood for THE PEOPLE, but I no longer recognize. I do realize that a President can only do so much, but THIS ONE has shown me something I NEVER expected. Even though I knew he was to the right of me, I can truly say I NEVER thought he was so FAR to the right of me.

There have been many days that I have wondered if he wasn't actually a Repuke in disguise. Sorry to say it, really I AM sorry to say it, worse yet I'm sickened by feeling it.

There seem to be very, very few people who represent ANYONE in this country that wants to do what is good for this country! We, who tout Democracy everywhere, but are morphing into something very very different. I would love to rise up and say NO MORE, but I really wonder if it would faze any of them at all.

Republics have fallen in the past because of corruption and greed, and it seems that it may well be what will happen to this country too! Patriotism is just a word.

12. Actually, I voted for the policies I THOUGHT he represented.
Now it's not clear. Yes it may just be political maneuvering, and it may have a wonderful outcome. But it has also contributed to the GOP anti-social-program framing.

13. Both.
Recommended, though it didn't show up.

I believed then that candidate Barack Obama had the greatest ability to get true democratic reforms through. I understood that Congress and corporations would be a ball & chain, hindering reform.

I still believe that President Obama has more potential ability to make real change than anyone else on the national stage. I've been disappointed by the lack of organized pressure by the grass roots Democrats, and the Democratic Left. However, I have been more disappointed in the President.

14. "the guy"
Is that you, McCain? Didn't you mean to say "that guy over there"?

Both, btw. I was never a fan of Hillary and was nauseated over the thought of having to vote for her. The more I learned about then Sen. Obama, the more impressed I was. Looking forward to voting for the man and policies again.

15. Both
I voted for him cause he seemed trustworthy and capable of carrying out the policies. It will be the last time I trust *any* leader since he was really a wolf in sheep's clothing. We need to stop giving power to individuals and distribute the responsibilities among qualified people.

The cure for cancer or diabetes will never come from a politician.
An alternative renewable source of energy to power the world will never come from a politician.
A sustainable way to take care of people's most basic needs will never come from a politician.

These decisions should be left to doctors, engineers and technicians. People that are deemed qualified by the knowledge set they have in order to make reliable decisions. Such decisons should also be free from external influence. Unfortunately, in a money-driven society everything has a price. As long as any individual has the capability to control vast resources there will always be corruption.

16. I voted for my preferred primary candidate, and then voted for the winner of the primary
Not the same person, though.

I didn't get my favorite choice, but oh well.
