The August "Harpers" just arrived - two things in the Index |
|
First let me give a plug for Harper's magazine. It's simply must be read every month. If you could subscribe to no others I recommend it, and of course The Nation.
Every month's issue has a 1-page section called "Harper's Index" that is just a collection of stand alone facts -but mostly things you are not likely aware of. Generally speaking they can be real eye-openers. This month's issue had two items in it that I would like everyone to see. The fist, a pair of similar entries, concerns employment and the second about an "ally" of ours. Here they go:
"Percentage of applicants offered undergraduate admission to Harvard this year: 6.2%" "Percentage of applicants accepted for employment on McDonald's National Hiring Day in April: 6.2%"
and next,
"Estimated percentage of Afghanistan's gross national product that comes from U.S. aid and other foreign sources: 97%"

1. That fact about Afghanistan is less impressive, when you consider that... |
|
Afghanistan's GNP is only slightly more than McDonald's yearly revenue. Seriously: $25 billion versus $24 billion.

3. Been around a long time, like The Atlantic Monthly and Scientific Asparagus. |
|
I subscribe to the New Yorker. I consider that a necessity.
Harper's is excellent.
I'm so old I remember Saturday Review, when they went to four different issues.

7. Was Harvard always that popular? I don't recall them being the "it" college to go to in the 70s. |
|
I didn't even apply to them after I graduated from high school. No one I knew did.
