Tax cuts are incompatible with GOP economic dogma |
|
You know how the Republicans like to talk about the federal budget like it's "family spending." How Your Family doesn't spend more money than it has and all that junk.
The first problem with that is, the national economy is highly dependent on families spending money they don't have. It's called credit, kids. Houses are bought with money people don't have. Cars are usually bought that way. Most expensive furniture is bought with money people don't have. And there are millions of businesses all over the country that are set up to make it possible to spend money you don't have, like banks, credit unions, finance companies, rent-to-own places and buy-here-pay-here car lots. The problem isn't people spending money they don't have, it's when they can't repay it.
The other one is best explained with an example: You are a nice wholesome all-American family living in a nice wholesome all-American house bought with other people's money, driving cars bought with other people's money, eating food that was transported to the store in a truck bought with other people's money pulling a trailer bought with other people's money and sitting on 18 tires bought with other people's money. In other words, a normal situation for a large number of Americans. You hear a hissing coming from the basement. Running downstairs, you see water gushing from the water heater. You gotta get a new one. Right now. If you believe Republican dogma, the first thing you need to do is go to work in the morning and tell your boss to cut your hourly pay by 10 percent. In reality, you'll buy a water heater with other people's money, haul it home, install it, use a shop vac bought with other people's money to sop up the mess, and maybe moonlight in a gas station for a couple months to pay off your credit card bill.

The actual first response of families facing mounting debt is to try and find more work or better paying work, or in other words, to increase their revenue.
